Furthermore, the vessel is small. The great ocean is a treasure of water. It cannot be measured by scooping it up. As it is said. Fifth, it should be understood from the previous one. Sixth, it is easy to understand. Seventh, a virtuous person should first make offerings to the Three Jewels when undertaking any task, take refuge, and pray, so that it may be accomplished easily. Eighth, as the lion said: With faith, one will abandon non-leisure. As it is said, having found the special leisure and met with refuge, one should study the special path. By this, one will attain enlightenment without delay. Remembering such benefits, one should take refuge three times during the day and three times during the night. Sixth, since body, life, and possessions will inevitably be separated without exception, if one abandons the Three Jewels for their sake, one will experience continuous suffering in all lifetimes. Therefore, no matter what happens, one should vow not to abandon refuge. Even for the sake of mere laughter, one should not utter words of abandoning refuge. Wherever one goes, one should train in taking refuge in the Thus-Gone One of that direction. Such teachings were given by the predecessors, but the source is not seen. Thus, the six common trainings are as they appear in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path. The first three of the individual trainings are explained in the Sutra Pitaka, and the latter three appear in the six-limbed refuge. The ways in which contradicting these trainings becomes a cause for decline and abandonment are: contradicting not abandoning even for the sake of life is directly abandoning refuge. Similarly, even if one has not abandoned the Three Jewels, if one holds to duality towards teachers and so on who are not in accordance with the Three Jewels, it also contradicts not speaking of others, and one abandons because one does not have confidence in refuge. If these do not occur, then it is only contradicting the training and is not a cause for abandonment, I think. Thus, taking refuge is the great door for entering the teachings of the Buddha. If taking refuge is not just lip service but has extraordinary power, one will not be defeated by outer and inner obstacles. The distinctions of qualities are easy to arise and difficult to decline, so they will increase more and more. Therefore, as previously explained, one should take refuge through remembering fear and qualities, and strive not to transgress its trainings. This is of utmost importance. Second, in three parts.

Thinking about karma and its results in general, thinking about them specifically, and the methods of adopting or rejecting after thinking. The first aspect has two parts: the actual way of thinking in general, and thinking by separating them. The first aspect has four parts: the way karma is definite, the great increase of karma, not encountering what has not been done, and not wasting what has been done. The first is: whether it is an ordinary person or a noble one, the happiness of feeling comfortable, even when sentient beings are born in hell, the happiness that arises from the blowing of a cool breeze, all of these arise from accumulating virtuous karma in the past. It is impossible for happiness to arise from non-virtuous karma. The suffering of feeling pain, even the suffering that arises in the continuum of an Arhat, all of these arise from accumulating non-virtuous karma in the past. It is impossible for suffering to arise from virtuous karma. As it is said in the "Precious Garland": "From non-virtue, all sufferings arise, likewise all the bad migrations. From virtue, all the good migrations and happiness in all births." Therefore, happiness and suffering are not without cause, nor do they arise from incompatible causes such as the chief and Ishvara, but from the general sum of virtuous and non-virtuous karma arises the general sum of happiness and suffering, and the various differences of happiness and suffering also arise separately from the various differences of the two karmas without any confusion. Gaining certainty about the certainty or infallibility of the results of karma is called the true view of all Buddhas, and is praised as the basis of all white dharmas. The second aspect is: even from a small virtuous karma, a very great result of happiness can arise, and even from a small non-virtuous karma, a very great result of suffering can arise, so the similarity of the increase of internal cause and effect is not present in external cause and effect. As it is said in the "Collection Sutra": "Even a small sin can cause great fear in the next world, and cause great destruction, like poison entering the stomach. Even a small merit can cause great happiness in the next world, and can also do great things, like grains ripening abundantly." The third aspect is: if one has not accumulated the karma that becomes the cause of experiencing happiness and suffering, then one will never experience the happiness and suffering of that karma. For example, even those who enjoy the fruits of the Teacher's accumulation of merit for countless eons cannot fully accumulate its cause.
