Since there is no valid means of proof, one should understand how the sign becomes unestablished as previously explained. Here, in the Clear Words, it says: 'That being so is like this, because this meaning as stated is something that this logician has himself accepted. How so? The causes and so forth that produce the internal sense bases are indeed existent, because the Tathagata has said so. Whatever the Tathagata has said is indeed so, just as 'Nirvana is peace.' To this proof established by others, what is it that you here desire as the meaning of the reason? Is it because the Tathagata spoke thus in conventional truth? Or because he spoke in ultimate truth? If it is in conventional truth, then for oneself, the meaning of the reason is not established. And, because in ultimate truth, what is to be proven and the means of proving are themselves not established, it is the very meaning of the unestablished reason and the meaning of contradiction.' This is the fault he has stated. Because in this way he himself has accepted that the reason is unestablished, therefore, for all subsequent inferences that establish the dharma of things as the reason, because the reason and so forth are not established for oneself, all means of proof will be completely destroyed. Regarding the meaning of what was said, those who wish to follow Chandrakirti say: 'Earth is not ultimately of the nature of hardness, because it is an element, like wind,' as established in the Blazing Intellect and so forth. If one establishes 'because it is an element in ultimate truth,' then it is not established for oneself; if one establishes 'because it is an element in conventional truth,' then it is not established for the external opponent who speaks of things. If he does not consider the sign to be unestablished, then it is said that it contradicts what one has oneself accepted, that the unestablishment through these two gateways is pervaded by the unestablished sign. Some say that if one establishes only the element, then it will be obstructed by the non-establishment by reason. Refuting in this way is definitely not the intention of the Clear Words, and the teacher also does not think that way, so it is a perverse statement for both systems. So, how should it be?

Because, the meaning of what is said as such is what this (Śāntarakṣita) himself promised. What is said as "as said" refers to the way of the subject not being established as previously stated, and it is said that it should also be applied to the reason. Because that treatise was spoken immediately after that. In that case, here it changes, like the direct perception of establishing the subject and the reason, it does not go beyond the two cases of being mistaken or not mistaken. If the meaning obtained by mistake is established as the reason, etc., then it is not established for those who speak of entities. If the meaning obtained without mistake is established as those, then it cannot be established by one's own valid cognition, so the proponent's own sign and the subject, etc., are not established. What was previously said is the meaning of "as said." How does the Well-Protected One show that he promised to establish non-establishment in that way? That is to say, "Because the Tathāgata said so" refers to examining from the perspective of the two truths. Its meaning is: Should we establish "because the Tathāgata spoke in conventional truth" as the reason? Or should we establish "because the Tathāgata spoke in ultimate truth" as the reason? It is not possible to examine in this way. Just like raising the prior argument, the subject must be established without distinguishing between true and false. Otherwise, just as one wishes that it would become unestablished for either the proponent or the opponent, the reason and the example, etc., are also considered in the same way. How could this perfect scholar be confused by such a rough refutation? Therefore, "Because the Tathāgata said so" is asking which of the two truths is the meaning of the reason. If it is conventional truth, then one does not think so, so it is not established for oneself. If it is ultimate truth, then we have already prohibited that in ultimate truth, the result exists or does not exist, and both arise from the cause, so it is not established for us. And the meaning that does not exist in either of the two truths is not accepted, so there is no need to clarify it. On that it is written, "Because it is arising." If you ask which of the two truths is the arising that is established as the reason, then it is the same as before. If you say which of the two truths' arising should be established as the reason, then you have not understood the point of the prior argument. After asking which of the two truths it is like this, if it is ultimate truth, then it is not established for oneself. If it is conventional truth, then for others...
