That is because those opponents do not want that, and in that case, no one can prove that the two examples and meanings are not the same. So what is it? That is to say, without distinguishing by any difference of "future sound" or "sound of the merits of space," the certainty that sound exists is acceptable in the view of those two opponents. And in the two views of asserting emptiness of self-nature and asserting non-emptiness of self-nature, it is also not established by non-erroneous consciousness. It is also not established by erroneous consciousness, there is no generality of eye or form established by valid cognition, what is established by erroneous consciousness is not established in the external opponent, what is obtained by non-erroneous consciousness is not established in the valid cognition of the previous opponent, so there is nothing similar to the example, that is the meaning. Non-erroneous is, in general, the samadhi that directly measures the ultimate truth, but here, it must be both the direct perception that does not confuse the self-character of the appearing object and the inference that does not confuse the self-character of the object of attachment. Because there is absolutely no valid cognition that establishes the three modes of the subject and the sign, the meaning obtained by non-erroneous consciousness cannot be the subject. Here, the term "own character" does not refer only to the ability to perform a function, as logicians believe, but refers to the nature of acknowledging the respective self-nature of any object or non-object, as mentioned before. Therefore, those who assert the existence of self-nature believe that the inference that measures non-objects is also not confused about the object of attachment of that kind of self-nature. If it is a consciousness that is not confused about that kind of self-nature, then whether it is not confused about the appearing object or the object of attachment, it will not be confused about that thing itself. Therefore, it is believed that the valid cognition of one's own school does not establish the subject, etc., but it is not believed that there is no conventional valid cognition that measures eyes and forms, etc., in the continuum of both opponents. In the continuum of the external opponent, the form, etc., guided by harmlessness, as mentioned before, there is no harm in reason in the object of the definite understanding that is merely certain to exist. To explain in more detail, for example, in grasping that a sprout exists, there are three ways of grasping: the self-nature of the sprout established by its own entity

To conceive of existence is to conceive of true existence, and although a sprout is not established by its own nature, to conceive of it as existing like an illusion is to conceive of false existence, and without distinguishing between truth and falsehood, it is merely to conceive of a general existence. There are also cases where a sprout is conceived of as existing in ways such as permanence and impermanence. However, since there is no conception that does not adhere to one of these three ways, there is no need to discuss them here. For sentient beings who have not yet generated the view of realizing the absence of inherent existence of things in their minds, there are only the two cases of conceiving of mere existence and conceiving of true existence, but the conception of existing like an illusion without its own nature does not occur. Before the view of phenomena as being like illusions is attained, it is not permissible in any way to consider all that is grasped as existent by the thoughts of sentient beings as true clinging. This has already been explained many times in the context of explaining conventional valid cognition and distinguishing between inherent existence and non-existence and the four alternatives of existence and non-existence. If it is not the case that all conventional terms made by thoughts before understanding the view of the absence of inherent existence are considered to be true clinging, then since worldly conventional terms are self-sufficient and not corrupted by the previously mentioned causes of error, the Madhyamikas must accept all established meanings as conventional terms, which would lead to logical faults. In this way, there would be no difference between existence and non-existence, just like in the Samkhya school, and thus a reversed view would become a great obstacle to realizing the meaning of Madhyamika. As a sign of misunderstanding emptiness in this way, many virtuous practices that were previously considered necessary to be done through thoughts are later treated as if they were attained through the view. Thus, all that came before is seen as clinging to characteristics, seen as binding to samsara. From this arises the understanding that these virtuous practices were taught to those who have not attained such profound views. Thus, with the wrong view of seeing fault in all thoughts, many abandon the Dharma, and cases like the Chinese monks are often seen. Therefore, before the view of the absence of inherent existence is attained, it is impossible for those individuals to distinguish between mere existence and existence established by its own characteristics. For any existence, as quoted in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, is pervaded by existence established by its own nature.
