It is for clinging. Due to this point, non-self-existence is also universally grasped as non-existent, so many argue that cause and effect cannot be established for emptiness of self-existence. For those who have generated the view of realizing non-self-existence in their continuum, all three ways of clinging to existence occur. However, once that view arises, as long as that activity does not diminish, when analyzing with reason and thinking about whether it is established by its own nature, the clinging to truth that accepts establishment by its own nature will not arise for a while. However, it is not that innate clinging to truth does not arise. Therefore, for the continuum in which the view of realizing non-self-existence, which is established by its own nature, has arisen and has not diminished, all clinging to the existence of sprouts is not clinging to existence as if it were an illusion. If it were not so, it would be impossible for the manifest clinging to existence as true to arise for them. The Madhyamikas, such as the teacher Lekdenjye, who consider the self-characteristic of things, which is established by its own nature, to be a convention, also accept the reason for accepting the self-continuum sign in their own system. This is because there is a self-characteristic that is established by its own nature in convention. Therefore, whether or not to establish the self-continuum sign in one's own system depends on this extremely subtle object of negation. Therefore, according to their system, the harmless sense consciousnesses that perceive the nature of things as established by their own nature are not mistaken about the object of appearance in convention. Similarly, the conceptual thought that clings to the existence of such a nature in sprouts, etc., is not mistaken about the object of clinging. If it were not so, and it was thought that these were mistaken, then what valid cognition is there that is established as a common appearance in the systems of both the realists and the two? If, as Chandrakirti thinks, even if there is no nature like the appearance of a self-characteristic, but if one argues for the realists with the sense consciousnesses that appear there, then when it is the subject or established, since non-self-existence has already been established, what is the use of the self-continuum sign? Or if one thinks that it is enough for the other party to be established, and it is not necessary to be established as a common appearance between the Madhyamika and the two, then this is neither what one wants nor is it reasonable. If this is the case, then all the formulations of proof will become merely the words of others, and therefore one is following the consequentialists. The

Those who, like Abbot Śāntarakṣita, hold that external objects do not exist in name, also consider them to be knowable entities in name, just as those who consider blue and so on to be real. Therefore, the sense consciousnesses that appear rely on them and grasp objects that are established by their own characteristics, so they are not mistaken by relying only on blue. When things like the eye, which are hidden, are established as subjects, although they cannot be truly established by direct perception, when the root of the proof is traced back, it must lead to a direct perception, which is what the proponents of philosophical systems acknowledge, because it is like a lineage of blind people. They also believe that the root of the proof leads to direct perception. At that time, the root direct perception is considered to be either a non-erroneous other-consciousness or a non-erroneous self-consciousness. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, it appears as an object established by its own characteristics, and according to the appearance, it must be established on the object, because that is what they believe. Therefore, for them and the two views of the Madhyamaka school, which asserts that there is no self-nature established by its own essence, there is no non-erroneous direct perception that is commonly accepted. In this way, even if one does not resort to direct perception, one can still answer. In this way, whoever asserts the existence of self-nature, whether conditioned or unconditioned, the meaning established by valid cognition must be that the essence of the way those things abide must exist on the object, because this can be refuted by reason. Therefore, it cannot be a valid means of proof. Second, it is shown that the reason is also not established by that fault. In the Clear Words, it says: Whatever is the way of stating the fault of the unestablished basis should also be applied to stating the fault of the unestablished on this reason called "because it exists." This indicates the above point. In this regard, previously, for the two opponents of emptiness and non-emptiness of self-nature established by its own essence, there is no valid means of proof for the subject that is commonly accepted, therefore, the subject of the Svātantrika syllogism, the aggregate of the form sense-sphere and the dharma of not being born from self, or the reason that there is no object to be proven, because the reason "because it exists" is also not commonly accepted in those two views.
