Therefore, diligent listening is the cause, and contemplating and meditating as appropriate will generate vast wisdom. So it is said. The venerable Maitreya also said: The thought of the three wheels of differentiation is considered the obscuration of knowledge. Stinginess and other differentiations are considered the obscuration of afflictions. Apart from wisdom, there is nothing else to abandon these obscurations. Therefore, wisdom is the most supreme, and its root is listening. Therefore, listening is the most supreme. So it is said. It is also said in the Compendium of Trainings: One should endure and seek listening. Then, one should dwell in the forest. One should diligently engage in equipoise. So it is said. In its auto-commentary, it is also said: If one cannot endure, one will be unable to subdue laziness, and therefore diligence in listening and so on will decline. Moreover, one who does not possess listening will not know the means of meditation and the means of completely pacifying afflictions. Therefore, one should seek listening without laziness. Also, it is said in the Sutra Requested by Sreematri: Thus, son of good family, if one possesses listening, wisdom will arise. If one possesses wisdom, afflictions will be completely pacified. If there are no afflictions, the demons will not find an opportunity. So it is said. Thus, for those who wish to practice the Dharma properly, generating the wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes the Dharma is the lifeblood of the path. Therefore, it is necessary to listen extensively to the immaculate scriptures and treatises. Although it is established by scripture and reason, not thinking that it is necessary is a fault of not being certain that one needs the analytical meditation of wisdom that individually examines during practice, and only obtaining the wrong certainty that it is not necessary. Therefore, those who wish for their own benefit should abandon such things like poison. The great yogi said: Jowo, to accomplish the omniscient Buddha, instead of doing something with as many scriptures as a mule can carry, it is better to show something the size of a palm. Hiding it will not get you anywhere. He opened a small book and placed it on his pillow, saying, "We are students, so even if we don't read it, we pay respect to all of these. If you say you don't understand the Dharma, what should you do?" It is said that when the monks in front of Potowa (博多瓦, 1031-1105, a great master of the Kadampa school) were making short trips, you

He said "Happy" three times. My Geshe (Tibetan: དགེ་བཤེས་, Wylie: dge bshes, Sanskrit: kalyāṇa-mitra, spiritual friend) is like the sky covering the earth, so I can rely on him, so I don't even need saliva for others. There is no need to look at those red root texts and commentaries, so it is easy. Not thinking about cause and effect, so I feel comfortable. This act of reciting mantras accomplishes many things, so I am satisfied. Sharawa said: Until enlightenment, there is no end to learning, it ends when you become a Buddha. Kamaba said: If you practice Dharma, what is the use of knowing so much? Doing so will cause oneself to fall. This is likely to happen to us who have little learning. If you overemphasize it, there is a danger of saying what is the use of knowing so much. If you practice Dharma seriously, you must know. Because this short life cannot be completed, you must not disturb the order of leisure and endowment, and constantly listen to the Dharma. I think that it is not necessary for practitioners (to have much learning), but it is necessary for speakers. For speakers, there is a great danger of falling into sin. It is only necessary for practitioners (to have much learning). Therefore, for practice, wisdom and the hearing that is the cause of wisdom are indispensable, and you must gain a firm conviction about this. Similarly, if you do not realize that you need to do analytical meditation during practice, it will be very difficult to succeed. Even a master of the Tripitaka who considers himself proficient only understands the preliminary practices of practice, or the key instructions, as not directly practicing, but as a support. For this reason, in order to quickly become a Buddha, you need to practice. The Buddha's teachings need to be heard, so proclaiming that it is beneficial to the teachings, and that practice are two different things, is a big talk and a contradiction. Because there are only two kinds of teachings: the teachings of doctrine and the teachings of practice. The former is to know how to practice, and the latter is to put it into practice after knowing it. Therefore, if you practice without making mistakes, then he is the supreme holder of the teachings. And, holding the teachings of practice without error depends on understanding the teachings of doctrine without error. Therefore, if you have learned a lot of Dharma before, then during practice, you must practice the meaning of those Dharmas, and you must not forget them. If you don't understand from the beginning, don't be discouraged, and according to your ability, strive to learn the Dharma that suits you. This is not to say that hearing is one thing and practice is another. But in the place where you need to practice, you must do hearing and thinking, therefore, this is an impartial path.
