Because it is necessary to proceed with intense vigor and for a long time, one should engage in analytical meditation. If the mind cannot remain on a single object, then when cultivating calm abiding, making the mind workable by allowing it to remain on a single object as desired, if one analyzes repeatedly, the mind will not be able to remain, so at that time one needs to engage in placement meditation. This will be explained in the context of calm abiding and insight. If one does not understand this method, one cannot say that if one is a wise person, one should only engage in analytical meditation, and if one is a mediocre person, one should only engage in placement meditation. Because each person needs to engage in both types of meditation. Wise people also need to cultivate calm abiding, etc., and mediocre people also need to cultivate intense faith in the spiritual friend, etc. These two methods of meditation, in both the Sutra and Tantra aspects, are said to require cultivation through individual discriminating awareness in very many cases. If one does not meditate through this method or meditates very little, the immaculate wisdom that is the life force of the path will not arise, and even if it arises slightly, the wisdom will not increase, so there will be no progress on the path. The ultimate goal of the path is: "Like omniscience within wisdom." As the teacher Ma Khol said, it lies in the wisdom that distinguishes all suchness and all that exists, without mixing them. Therefore, if the longer one meditates on the path, the more severe the forgetfulness, the duller the memory, and the more dull one becomes in distinguishing what to abandon and what to adopt, then one should clearly know that this is a sign of having gone astray on the path. Furthermore, by knowing the many qualities of the Three Jewels, etc., the faith based on them will also greatly increase; by understanding the many faults of samsara, renunciation and weariness will also increase; by seeing the benefits of liberation from many angles, the pursuit of it will also be more intense; and by understanding the many wonderful actions of the mind of enlightenment and the six perfections, etc., the irreversible faith, desire, and diligence towards them will all increase. All of these depend solely on studying the meaning of the scriptures through the wisdom of individual discriminating awareness and meditating on them. Therefore, those who are intelligent should generate an unwavering conviction in this method that cannot be changed by others. Those who have very little understanding of the method of meditation say: Analyze with individual discriminating awareness.

If one does a lot and protects a lot, it will become an obstacle to the samadhi of single-pointed concentration, therefore one cannot achieve stable samadhi, they say. It should be said that if the samadhi where the mind can be placed on a single object as one wishes, if it has not been achieved before, and is now newly achieved, if one examines multiple objects, it will not arise, therefore before it is achieved, one should abide in the practice of achieving it, and only do the practice of abiding, if they say that, then we also agree. If one thinks that doing a lot of analytical meditation before achieving such a samadhi is an obstacle to that samadhi, then it is clear that they have not understood at all the method of achieving samadhi as explained in the Great Vehicle Commentary. For example, like this, for example, gold and silver, if a skilled blacksmith repeatedly burns it with fire and repeatedly washes it with water, then all the dirt and impurities will be removed, and it will become very soft and usable. Then, one can freely make earrings and other ornaments as one wishes. Similarly, first for afflictions and near afflictions and misdeeds, etc., as it says in the chapters on the results of black karma and the faults of samsara, etc. Through the wisdom of individual examination, repeatedly meditating on those faults, with the intention of making the mind feel completely painful or weary, just like burning gold with fire, turning the mind away from the black side, and clearing away those impurities. As it says in the chapters on the qualities of the spiritual friend and the meaningfulness of leisure and endowment, and the qualities of the Three Jewels and the results of white karma and the benefits of bodhicitta, etc., through the wisdom of individual examination, repeatedly meditating on those qualities, with the intention of making the mind moist or clear, just like washing gold with water, making the mind clearly turn to the white side, and making it happy, thereby moistening the mind with virtuous Dharma. If one does that, then whichever of shamatha and vipashyana one wants to achieve, as long as the mind focuses on it, one can achieve it effortlessly. Therefore, such analytical meditation is a supreme method for achieving non-conceptual samadhi. It is also like that, the noble Asanga said, for example, a blacksmith or a skilled blacksmith's apprentice at any time
