It is like pointing out and then moving to another place. If it is said like that, it becomes irrelevant, and it also well destroys the principle of the three wisdoms arising in sequence, as well as the overall system of scriptures. Moreover, it would be well to utter the nonsense that "one does not need to hear much in order to walk the path without error." The signs of not understanding the key points of these are that for those who have studied a lot in the Sutra or Tantra aspects, and those who have not studied the treatises at all, when they start practicing now, there will be no difference in the amount of practice; also, the bad habit of considering it a flaw if the practitioner listens to the Dharma and observes, etc., has become deeply rooted. Therefore, the certainty determined by the wisdom of hearing and thinking is only to familiarize oneself with that, although that is not meditation-born wisdom, but what contradiction is there in it being meditation? If there is a contradiction, then it would be impossible for an ordinary person who has not attained the proximity of the first dhyana to have dhyana, because when one reaches a high position in the desire realm, it is said that one generates meditation-born wisdom based on that, but other than that, there is no meditation-born wisdom on that, which is why it is said many times in the Abhidharma. Therefore, the so-called "meditation" is to be understood as it is said in the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom, "Clear Words": "The so-called meditation is to make the mind a part of it or to make it its object." For example, just as saying to meditate on faith, to meditate on compassion, one must generate that and that in the mind. Therefore, the great translators sometimes translate it as "the path of meditation," and sometimes, as it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization, "On the paths of seeing and habituation," they translate it as "habituation," and meditation and habituation are the same in meaning. Furthermore, Lord Maitreya said, "The decisive factor and the path of seeing, as well as the path of meditation itself, repeatedly contemplate, measure, and definitely think about the path of meditation." Because this is the meditation path of the Mahayana noble ones, if one considers that repeated contemplation, measurement, and definite thinking are present, and thinks that observation and meditation are contradictory, that is a laughing matter. In that case, just as it is said to meditate on faith and the four immeasurables and the mind of enlightenment, and to meditate on impermanence and suffering, one also needs to repeatedly observe and habituate.

It seems that there are endless statements about what constitutes meditation. For example, in the Bodhicharyavatara and the Compendium of Trainings, it says, "To tame my mind, I have composed this." All the stages of the path explained in these two texts are said to be meditation. Also, in the Compendium of Trainings, it says, "Therefore, one should meditate on abandoning, protecting, purifying, and increasing the body, possessions, and merit without interruption." Therefore, for each of the three—body, possessions, and virtue—doing the four activities of abandoning, protecting, purifying, and increasing is all said to be meditation, so the term "meditation" should not be taken in a narrow sense. Furthermore, the extreme of wrongly believing that all thoughts are grasping at characteristics and therefore considering them obstacles to enlightenment, and then abandoning all meditations that involve individual analysis, is the system of the Chinese teacher Hwashang. The refutation of this will be explained in the context of shamatha and vipashyana. This wrong view also hinders the arising of great respect for the great treatises, because the meaning of those treatises mostly seems to require investigation through individual analysis, and these analyses are seen as unnecessary at the time of practice. This is also a major cause of the decline of the teachings, because the scriptures and great commentaries are seen as not becoming instructions, and therefore they are not valued. Thus, if there are two types of meditation when meditating on the path—meditation through analysis and meditation that is placed without analysis—then what kind of path is analytical meditation, and what kind is placement meditation? It will be explained: like meditating on faith in the spiritual friend, and meditating on the preciousness and difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, impermanence and death, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, and the mind of enlightenment, these require analytical meditation. Like this, for these, one needs a strong and long-lasting ability to convince the mind, because without that, one cannot prevent the opposite of disrespect and so on. And generating such a mind depends entirely on meditating through repeated individual analysis. For example, if one attaches many beautiful characteristics to an object of desire, strong desire arises; similarly, if one thinks of many unpleasant characteristics of an enemy, strong hatred arises. Therefore, when meditating on these paths, it doesn't matter whether the appearance of the object is clear or unclear, what matters is
