Secondly, regarding the classification of individuals who seize the bardo: There are three types of individuals who seize the bardo: superior, middling, and inferior. The superior individual is, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings, able to accomplish the illusory body of the third stage at the end of death for the sake of the bardo. The second type of individual is, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "Having combined in this way, one falls asleep. At that time, in the instant when mind, mental factors, and ignorance are extremely absorbed, one forgets mindfulness. Afterwards, the nature of wisdom without forgetting is luminosity. Again, when liberated, the nature of wind stirs, and if other dreams arise." Therefore, when the four emptinesses of sleep are completed, one is then propelled by the force of wind in dreams. The completion of the four emptinesses of sleep is a measure of seizing the four emptinesses of death; the action of the wind force of dreams is a measure of seizing the wind force of the bardo after seizing the emptiness of death. The inferior individual, although not like the previous two, if they maintain pure vows and practice the two stages, they will clearly understand the stages from the signs of earth dissolving into water at the time of death, to the manifestation of the actual luminosity of death, and the stages of accomplishing the bardo immediately thereafter. If one practices these key instructions extensively from now on, even if one cannot seize the luminosity of death and the wind force of the bardo, one will be able to seize them through the power of familiarity with these key instructions. Secondly, regarding how they seize them: The first type of individual only needs to generate the aspiration to arise as the illusory body of the third stage at the time of death. The middling individual, when the mind is clear before approaching death, should unhesitatingly give away all attached possessions to the field of merit, confess the faults of violating the vows taken, and restore the broken vows. Afterwards, visualize oneself as the deity, and in front, visualize the mandala of the guru and yidam deities, make offerings, and pray for blessings to be able to merge death with luminosity, and pray for blessings to be able to merge the bardo with the illusory body, making fervent prayers. Afterwards, examine the signs of death, etc. When earth dissolves into water, the body cannot move, and the essence...

become weak and slow. One feels as if the body is sinking into the earth, and there is a sound of "I am being pulled away." The inner sign is the appearance of something like a mirage, a hazy, watery vision. The outer sign of water dissolving into fire is: the moisture of the mouth and nose dries up and the tongue becomes shorter. Inwardly, it seems to be filled with a smoky, bluish haze. The outer sign of fire dissolving into wind is: the temperature decreases and the body's warmth gathers from the extremities. The inner sign is the appearance of many red, speckled things like fireflies. The outer sign of the wind of conceptualization dissolving into consciousness is: the breath flows out long and one cannot draw it in. Even if one draws it in a little, it is drawn in short and rough. The inner sign is: many appearances like a butter lamp not being moved by the wind occur. Then, the first appearance called "emptiness" arises: it is like moonlight rising in a cloudless sky. Then, after that appearance has dissolved, the appearance called "very emptiness" spreads: like sunlight rising in a clear sky, a red or reddish-yellow appearance arises. Then, after that appearance has also dissolved, the near-attainment called "great emptiness" arises: like a clear sky being covered by the darkness of twilight, a blackness occurs and memory also fades. Then, when that unconsciousness of having gone into blackness clears, the clear light called "all emptiness" arises: like a clear dawn sky free from the light of the sun and moon and the appearance of blackness: this is the actual clear light. Since these signs of the dissolution of the elements at the time of death seem to come from the early stages, one should recognize them well. When the four signs such as mirages arise, one should meditate at the time of each of those that neither the person nor phenomena are established by their own nature. Then, when the four emptinesses such as the appearance of moonlight in a cloudless sky arise, one should also meditate that neither the person nor phenomena are established by their own nature. In particular, at the time of the fourth emptiness of death, one should recognize that the coarse dualistic appearance has subsided and a cloudless sky appears, and one should try to remain in equanimity with it as much as possible. Je Mila also said: The clear light of death is the Dharmakaya, One must recognize that it is it. To recognize it, one must now understand the meaning of viewing the nature of reality through the introduction of the precious lama.
