It is called "La." The Sanskrit word for "effort" is "Ayama," which means effort, prevention, and long beak. Here, it refers to the latter meaning. Therefore, "life and effort" is a mistranslation. If it is a parallel collection, it will become two words. This is what Tibetan scholars say. From the perspective of the Kalachakra, it refers to the intermediate state, explaining that preventing life means the effort of life. The Tibetan word "effort" does not include both the meanings of preventing and prolonging. However, from its Sanskrit etymology, it can be divided into these two meanings. Similarly, the "collecting" of the Tibetan word "Sordu" has the meaning of accepting, and although it does not have the meaning of "each, repeatedly," the Sanskrit etymology has it, which is not contradictory. The wind that moves in the circle above, in the nature of entering, rising, and staying, repeats naturally day and night, so it is the self-mantra. The commentary of the old translation of this says: Because it repeats day and night. The self-mantra is in the heart, that is, visualizing on the lotus of one's own heart. However, the commentary of the new translation says: Because it repeats, it is the self-mantra. It is good to say this, because "ཕྱིར" is the reason. The reason for considering the wind as the effort of life above is not this, and there is no other reason to attach, so it must be the reason for the self-mantra. The "Lamp Illuminating" of Chapter Eleven also says: The self-mantra is the three letters with the nature of entering and so on. Here, the commentary on the latter tantra of Naropa says: Life and effort means visualizing the lotus of one's own heart as short A. (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: A) Here, the explanation of life effort, the repetition of the entry of wind and so on day and night, and the self-mantra appearing in the "Lamp Illuminating" are not mentioned, possibly because the version is incorrect, or it is a translation error. Because the other parts of the six branches look like the "Lamp Illuminating." Regarding visualizing the short A in the heart, it may be in some Sanskrit texts of the "Lamp Illuminating," or it is the intention of the commentator. Because the "Lamp Illuminating" speaks of the indestructible bindu, and it is consistent with the scripture quoted in the "Practice Collection," that is, the indestructible short A in the heart, so it is good.

"Life is placed in the bindu." In the Commentary on the Lamp, it only mentions "belonging to the indestructible." Its meaning is: the bindu is the indestructible to be contemplated in the heart. Life is the winds. Being placed in it means being placed in the category of the indestructible, that is, the winds are gathered into the indestructible. This is the function of what is accomplished by meditating on the three vital energies. Here, in Nectar Secret, it says: The self-mantra is three letters, and what is contemplated in the heart is that these three dissolve into the three stages of the wind's rising, entering, and abiding, and that these three also dissolve into the life-wind. Meditating on the life-wind dissolving into the indestructible bindu is explained as the meaning of "life is placed in the bindu." Thubpa Pal says: When meditating on the self-mantra in the heart, contemplate the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), and the sound arising from Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) is called the indestructible, which is the form of a subtle A (藏文:ཨ།,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:阿) syllable bindu. Placing the mind in the bindu means to contemplate by making the mind abide in it. Thus it is said. In the Commentary Moonlight, it says: In the heart, contemplate your own mantra, the Samadhi Being, and on top of its bindu, contemplate the nature of the self-mind in the form of Nada as the essence of mind. Thus it is said. In Lagmi, it says: In the center of the lotus in the heart, in the dhūti, contemplate the bindu of the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), the sound of your own mantra like a cloud, and placing the life there is explained as placing the consciousness riding on the wind. There are different explanations from other systems. Even in this system, it is permissible to meditate on the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) and the syllable A (藏文:ཨ།,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:阿) in the heart at this time, but the meaning of the self-mantra mentioned here does not refer to these, but rather to focusing the life and mind on the bindu above the letters. This is not the meaning of "life is placed in the bindu." Because the uncommon necessity of meditating on the three vital energies at this time is: to draw out the four emptinesses by gathering and dissolving the other winds into the indestructible in the heart. Even if the other two vital energies can be understood in this way, for the meditation on the vital energy of the lower gate, since it has been said before that the bodhicitta is lowered to the top of the mark and held, the four emptinesses arising from the collecting sequence in the heart will not arise, which is true, because that is holding the bindu at the top of the secret place beforehand.
