Explanation of the individual characteristics of the three appearances. First, in the Compendium of Conduct, regarding the categories of names for the three consciousnesses, it is said that there are two types: those common to the Mahayana of the Paramitas and those uncommon that are famous only in the Vajrayana. The first of these is: By the power of the Teacher's clear exposition of skillful means and wisdom, the term "Maning," which is not clear, is also discarded, and those three, as well as the three: mind, intellect, and consciousness; the three: imputation, dependence, and accomplishment; the three: desire, hatred, and delusion; the three: nature, and so forth, are all categories. Among these, skillful means is increase, wisdom is appearance, and Maning, the combination of the two, is near attainment. Appearance is predominantly the wisdom of emptiness among the two, bliss and emptiness, while increase is the opposite of that, and near attainment is the equality of the two, hence it is called that. Whatever is skillful means and wisdom and the combination of the two, not everything is shown as those three. That is also done from the perspective of the three appearances of the path, and in a way that is similar to that, the three appearances of the ground are also referred to in that way. Appearance is called mind, increase is called intellect, and near attainment is called consciousness. Whatever the three, mind, intellect, and consciousness, are, it is not that everything is shown as those three, and it is not that the three, mind, intellect, and consciousness, are considered to be contradictory, just as the three appearances are contradictory. In other treatises, it is said that mind is the alaya, intellect is the afflicted intellect, and consciousness is the six entering consciousnesses. Based on this, appearance is explained as the entering consciousness, increase as the afflicted intellect, and near attainment as the alaya. Although such explanations appear, they are not considered reasonable. If one were to think that increase and attainment are the alaya and the afflicted intellect, then just as the alaya and the afflicted intellect, which are different in nature from the six aggregates, cannot be determined to be manifest for ordinary beings, those two would also be subject to the same fault. Moreover, the explanation of the object and aspect of appearance and the object and aspect of those two are extremely dissimilar, and it is said that appearances are newly generated through the path of inner and outer life force activities, which is said in many places, and this would contradict those. If one were to think that there is a reason for applying the names alaya and so forth, then it is unreasonable because that has not been explained. So, one might wonder, how should it be? In the scriptures, it is said that the three, mind, intellect, and consciousness, are generally the root of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana.

place. Here, in order to show the distinction between the three—mind, intellect, and consciousness—which are the root of all Samantabhadra's teachings, the names of these three are applied to the three appearances. As quoted from the condensed practice of the Wisdom Vajra All-Gathering: Consciousness arises from clear light. That itself is mind and Pages 301 to 400.
