Pages 301 to 400. Pages 301 to 400. Suchness. Thus, the suchness of all dharmas, like the sky, is that which is not made by the Buddhas. And conceptualization, that is, the mind of enlightenment of clear light, in which the two wisdoms become one taste, inseparable, is the suchness of mantra or the ultimate truth of mantra. Thus, the method of vajra recitation is shown by reciting the mantra or the spoken mantra and the two mudras of mantra. Having done that, generating the mind of enlightenment of the two truths is shown by the meaning of the mantra or the object of the mantra and the ultimate truth of the mantra. Hold this as the meaning of the explanatory tantra. Fifth, the suchness of mantra in the five stages is shown in the tenth chapter of the root tantra, which states that all mantras are condensed into three syllables. And the meaning of that, in the second chapter of the prophecy of intention, is explained by the scriptures that speak of spoken mantras, and those scriptures are quoted. Also in the Compendium of Conduct, the way in which the three letters are generated by other letters is shown by those scriptures, and those are quoted. In the quoted scriptures, below the explanation of reciting the mantra with three letters, it says: The short vowel becomes all speech, it is neither one nor many nor non-existent. In the Compendium of Conduct, except for explaining the meaning of "the short vowel becomes all speech," it is not actually explained in other scriptures. The reason for this is that in order to know the suchness of mantra, it is necessary to know well the difference between the definitive and provisional meanings of the statement that the short A is the root of all speech. If this is known, it is easy to understand the ultimate meaning of other scriptures. Therefore, in the Compendium of Conduct, in response to the question of how the short A becomes the cause of entering into all speech, it is said: Here, those who explain the scriptures first make the statement of grammar and follow only the meaning of sound. Also, in what place is it spoken with letters, for what reason, and how does it enter well, is not known. The suchness of letters, as it is, is not known, because it is the realm of activity of the Buddhas. Listen, it should be understood in the order of the teachings. The meaning of what is said in this way must be well determined. Among them, those who explain the scriptures are in the explanatory tantra.

Depending on this, all short syllables become the cause of entering language, and those who do not understand the suchness of mantras are all explaining the meaning of their own scriptures. In the Compendium of Practices, it says: "The so-called suchness of mantras refers to the root tantras and subsequent tantras that contain suchness, in which only mantras are spoken, but it is not shown how to collect mantras. In the explanatory tantras, the collection of mantras, the symbols of mantras, the meaning of mantras, and the suchness of mantras are all truly declared by the Bhagavan." Therefore, those who do not understand the explanatory tantras and are overly attached to external secret mantras will not understand these. In the Vyākaraṇa, the meaning up to "following" is: according to the grammarians' view, explaining the meaning of language and words through the power of sound, determining the meaning of words, thereby understanding the meaning expressed by the sound. What is expressed by letters is the literal meaning of "all short syllables become language" as stated in the tantras, and the definite meaning of other transformations. That is, the meaning of where it enters, why it enters, and how it enters. To this, the Tibetan lamas explain that language and words enter their own expressed meaning; why they enter, because they enter through short syllables as the cause; how they enter, from many letters combining into names, from names combining into words, from words combining into language, from language combining into treatises, this explanation is meaningless. If this is the case, then relying on grammar to explain the scriptures but saying that they are not understood would be very unreasonable. So, what is it? Here, the enterer is: what is said in the language that has the nature of vowels and consonants, symbolizing the manifestation of wind, tone, and clarity. Where does it enter? It enters the indestructible place in the heart, as previously stated by quoting the Compendium of Practices. Why does it enter? As the Compendium of Practices says: "After obtaining indestructibility, things will become empty." Therefore, it is for manifesting emptiness luminosity. How does it enter? In the manner of the dissolving sequence of earth dissolving into water, etc. The suchness of the short syllable A of such three ways is the Buddhas.
