This is the stage of the illusory body, also known as the basic Sambhogakaya. Although there is no distinction between pure and impure illusory bodies at the base level, it can represent both illusory bodies of the path stage, which will be explained later. The Sambhogakaya of the basic Bardo, which is invisible to ordinary eyes, becomes visible to those eyes when taking birth in the realm of existence, and that is the basic Nirmanakaya. Regarding this principle, there are five stages: The conventional truth is illusion itself. The Sambhogakaya is also it. It becomes a Gandharva being. The Vajra body is also it. Here, the illusory body of the third stage is described as the Gandharva being in the Bardo. Therefore, it should be understood that the illusory body of the path is designated as the Bardo, and the Bardo of the base is designated as the illusory body of the path. The reason for saying this is that for those who lack skillful means and instructions, the wind-mind that arises in the Bardo will appear, while for those who possess skillful means and instructions, the illusory body will appear as the Sambhogakaya. As stated in the Compendium of Conduct: Therefore, those ignorant children are called the intermediate state of existence, which becomes the cause of Samsara. Those who have obtained the instructions of all the Tathagatas through the lineage of the Lamas are called self-blessing, just as appearances in a wall, canvas, or mirror. By the nature of the Vajra body, one emanates oneself, possessing all perfections, a body that one never tires of seeing, adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being. The key to the Father and Son's explanation of the Bardo in this way is that for those without instructions, death and birth are subject to karma, thus turning the wheel of Samsara; while for those with instructions, what appears at death is the Dharmakaya, and what arises according to karma is the Nirmanakaya. Therefore, the base has the two bodies of the path, and the two bodies of the path can also be represented by the two dharmas of the base. In the classification of stages, one should also understand the second stage of mind-fixation, starting from abiding in Vajra recitation, and through the two Dhyanas, manifest luminosity as in the stages of death. Therefore, the paths of the completion stage are also like the stages of death.
