consistent, and the statement that all appearances are newly generated by the path of the inner and outer life force is contrary to many statements. If it is thought that there is some reason for applying names such as Alaya, it is unreasonable because it has not been explained. So how should it be understood? The scriptures say that mind, intellect, and consciousness are generally the root of all pure dharmas. Here, it is thought that the difference between the three, mind, intellect, and consciousness, which become the root of all pure dharmas, is to be shown, so the names of these three are given to the three appearances. As Yeshe Dorje quoted in the Collected Tantras and the Condensed Practice Tantra: "Consciousness arises from luminosity. It is called mind and intellect, and all dharmas with the nature of pervasive defilement and pervasive purification are its root." Also, as the Vajra Garland says: "Having the nature of three appearances, here hearing the three consciousnesses, the nature root of all sentient beings is this." And so on. Since it is said that all three appearances are consciousness, then mind and intellect are the same, so each of the three appearances can get the names of these three. And matching these three with the three appearances separately is established on the three that arise before and after the similar category of the intellect's consciousness. In terms of the meaning of the words, because it accumulates, it is mind, because it becomes the support, it is intellect, and because it is the place of support, it is consciousness, so it is said. And this is complete in each of the three appearances' minds, and there is no difference in amount, so it is impossible to distinguish them through these definitions. In the Five Stages, appearance is said to be other-powered, increase is said to be completely conceptual, and near attainment is said to be perfectly established. This explanation is that the basis of appearance, where the apprehended and the apprehender appear far apart, is other-powered, and relying on that appearance, the false discrimination that clings to the apprehended and the apprehender as different entities is completely conceptual, and at the time of manifesting the unchanging perfectly established nature, like being separated from both the completely conceptual and the two-grasping, it is the initial basis of the empty dharmas, appearance, and relying on it, increase arises, and at the time of near attainment, both of the former are reversed, relying on the dharma nature consistency of the union of skillful means and wisdom? It remains to be examined. Appearance corresponds to hatred, increase corresponds to desire, and near attainment corresponds to ignorance.
