The door of differentiation. What is the reason for differentiating? The respective nature of each division. Everything is shown as a branch of ultimately attaining Buddhahood. First, in chapter seventeen, the vows of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also mentioned. In the Compendium of Practices, it is also said that according to the three inclinations of the beings to be tamed, the practices are divided into three: for those who are inclined towards the inferior, the practice of detachment is shown; for those who are inclined towards the vast, the practice of the grounds and perfections is shown; and for those who are particularly inclined towards the profound, the practice of desire is shown. The former is the path of the Lesser Vehicle, and the latter two belong to the path of the Great Vehicle. Second, explaining the reason for saying that there are two doors of differentiation. Because there are two types of beings to be tamed, the inferior and the superior, who desire to attain only the state of pacifying the suffering of samsara for the sake of oneself alone, and who desire to attain the state of Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings. Which vehicle leads these two to their respective states? These two vehicles are called the Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle. The two teachings that are taught in accordance with these two are called the collections of the superior and inferior vehicles. The Lesser Vehicle has two, the Shravakas and the Pratyekabuddhas, and the path that leads them to their respective states is divided into the two vehicles of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, hence there are three vehicles. Third, there are two: the establishment of the Lesser Vehicle and the establishment of the Great Vehicle. First, although the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have superior and inferior faculties and results, the establishment of the path is mostly the same, as stated in the Basis of the Grounds. Since detailed differences are feared to be verbose, here only a few rough establishments common to both will be mentioned. Those of these two lineages turn their backs on bearing the burden of benefiting others, and therefore enter the path solely for their own liberation. The main cause for attaining liberation is the wisdom that realizes the meaning of selflessness, because the main cause for binding to samsara is self-grasping. Therefore, they also realize this meaning, seek this wisdom, and cultivate it with the help of other paths such as ethics and samadhi, thereby exhausting all afflictions. These consider the person to be inherently established by its own nature from the beginning.

I thought I understood emptiness as a mere illusion of appearance, but in reality, I did not grasp it. Some Sautrāntikas, Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas, Yogācāras, and some Madhyamikas believe that realizing the selflessness of a real self posited by outsiders is the meaning of realizing the selflessness of persons. However, the venerable Candrakīrti argues that if this were the case, the clinging to the truth of self would not diminish in the slightest. In such a case, realizing the selflessness of persons would be meaningless, because as long as the clinging to the truth of self exists, the self-grasping will not diminish either. Just as realizing the selflessness of phenomena must be established as the meaning of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, realizing the selflessness of self must also be established as the meaning of realizing the selflessness of persons. Therefore, as long as there is a clinging to the truth of the aggregates, there will also be a clinging to the truth of self. As long as this clinging exists, all afflictions will not diminish. Therefore, it must be assumed that Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, no matter how hard they try, cannot be liberated from saṃsāra. He thinks this is unreasonable and explains that this is also the view of the noble ones. On this point, this teacher, Buddhapālita, and Śāntideva all agree. The second point is that merely wanting to attain unsurpassed bodhi for the benefit of all sentient beings and thus studying the six perfections refers to the common meaning of Mahāyāna practitioners, because in the Tantric vehicle as well, it is repeatedly stated in the tantras that one can attain enlightenment through this path. However, there are many different characteristics between the two paths. The path of those individuals is the Mahāyāna path that leads to omniscience. For the Pāramitā Mahāyāna practitioners, the general framework of the path is limited to this, and if divided from the perspective of view, there are two: Madhyamaka and Yogācāra. Nevertheless, since there is no explanation of the different levels of these two vehicles, the two are the same vehicle. The only difference is whether or not one can fathom the depth of reality, the former having sharp faculties and the latter having dull faculties. Here, in order to explain the purpose of teaching the Perfection of Wisdom vehicle, the main disciples to be trained are the Madhyamikas, while the Yogācāras are the secondary or ordinary disciples to be trained by that vehicle.
