Then, the red thread arising from the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: seed syllable) syllable, measuring three times the student's height, is wound seven times and tied with three or six knots. It is said to be tied on the right arm, or in other lineages, on the left arm. Reciting "Oṃ Buddha Maitri Rakṣa Rakṣa Sarvān Svāhā" (Tibetan: ༀ་བུདྡྷ་མཻ་ཏྲི་རཀྵ་རཀྵ་སརྦཱན་སྭཱཧཱ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ बुद्ध मैत्रि रक्ष रक्ष सर्वान् स्वाहा, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ buddha maitri rakṣa rakṣa sarvān svāhā, Chinese literal meaning: Om, Buddha, Maitri, Protect, Protect, All, Svāhā), one binds oneself and protects oneself properly. Folding the body-length thread three times makes it one-third of the body length, from which six or three knots can be tied, and the choice of right or left arm is optional. The *Abhisambodhi of Vairocana* says to tie it on the left, and the *Mayajala* says to tie it on the right, while many, such as Nāgārjuna, Lāvaṇapa, and Ajitamitra, tie it on the right and make three knots. The *Vajramala Tantra* says to wind a thread one cubit and four fingers long, with three vajra knots, three times around the left arm. The distinction between right and left based on male and female, and how to handle the intervals between knots, etc., which Tibetans do, are not seen in the mandala rituals. Regarding spinning the thread, Nāgārjuna and Yuganaddha clearly state that it should be done by a girl. Prajñāśrī desires to visualize the five-colored thread as a vajra thread arising from the Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: seed syllable) syllable, but those with valid measure have not said so. The fifth (chapter) is: In the world, the omniscient ones, sometimes appear or do not appear, like the udumbara flower. Even in hundreds of paths, it is only occasional. Whoever can do incomparable benefit for sentient beings, and can prevent falling into sorrow. The emergence of the way of practicing secret mantra, is even rarer than that. In countless eons, whatever sins were previously committed, merely by seeing such a mandala, all those sins will be exhausted. What need is there to say about those who have boundless fame and abide in the practice of mantra? If one recites the protective mantra, one will attain the unsurpassed state. For those who have extremely pure wisdom, all their sufferings, and the evil destinies that arise, will be completely pacified. Great beings, you have today obtained an incomparable gain. Because of you, all the victors, and the great beings and their retinues, have fully upheld all the teachings. Abiding and arising, therefore you will have a good birth in the great vehicle. This great vehicle will greatly arise, this supreme path is

Possessing auspiciousness. Whoever causes you all to accomplish, becomes a Tathagata. I am delighted to explain this meaning. The two lines "Whoever sentient beings" are not found in the current Abhisamayalankara, and although not mentioned in the commentary, they appear in many mandala rituals. From the first line to "extremely rare," it is said that the arising of mantras is rare, the next four lines say that seeing the mandala is powerful, the next four lines say that reciting and meditating on mantras is powerful, and the next four lines show that having faith in mantras is powerful. Seeing the mandala means that if one possesses the three qualities of seeing, one will be born. The preparatory actions are to confess sins, take refuge, and take vows in order to enter the mandala. The root is to generate bodhicitta and rejoice upon seeing the bodies, hand gestures, etc., of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas when entering the mandala. The third is to keep the samaya vows of not abandoning the Dharma, not abandoning bodhicitta, etc. If one possesses these three and sees the mandala, one can purify the sins accumulated over many kalpas. "Limitless Fame" refers to the mantra that is famous for its limitless qualities, as explained in the commentary on the Abhisamayalankara. Shantipa said that the Buddha has limitless fame. In Immaculate Wisdom, it is said to have unwavering wisdom, meaning that the mind is not swayed by anything other than the meaning of the mantra. "Being fully grasped and born" means that now one is being born into the Mahayana, and tomorrow one will have been born into the Mahayana, as explained in the commentary. In the Garland, it is said that one who enters the mandala is one who has been born. The Mahayana that practices mantras is the main cause for the arising of unsurpassed bodhi, so it is a great arising. The commentary explains the great arising in the Garland, saying that it is through the Mahayana that one possesses the most excellent great arising, which is consistent with this. Then, after protecting them with the mantras that encircle them, for the sake of reciting, give the mantra, understand the dream, and say to me tomorrow. After saying this, in the mandala room or elsewhere, have them lie down in the lion posture. At that time, the General Tantra says: On the ground covered with kusha grass, have them lie down with their head facing east. As it is said, it should be done accordingly.
