Reside in a place free from noise and secluded, sit in the lotus position, and straighten the body. As it is said, place the tongue from the root to the front teeth against the upper palate, and close the lips together, and also possess other practices of samadhi. Then, place the object to be meditated upon, such as the color of the subtle vajra, as it has been determined, on the tip of the nose, and hold the mind there. It is said in the Avatara: From the finest, like the tip of a hair, to the thickest, like a sesame seed, resembling the color of one's own deity, it is said to be five roots. Kunu considers that this is first generated in the navel, and is called Sukshma Vajra Subtle Vajra), and then lifted up, standing upright from the nostril to the tip of the nose. Shakya Shijen considers it to be drawn from the heart. In the commentary on the Avatara, it is said: From the heart, along with the flow of air, mentally recite the essence and draw it to the tip of the nose. In the Buddha Secret, it is said: When meditating on the subtle vajra, if the inflow and outflow of air are blocked, and the air is held in the nostrils, a special tactile sensation corresponding to the abiding of the mind will arise. Regarding the method of holding the mind, Shakya Shijen says: The mad mind behaves perversely like a wild elephant, tie it to the pillar of the object with the rope of mindfulness, and then gradually subdue it with the iron hook of wisdom. Quoting the words from the Essence of Madhyamaka, he said to do so. Among them, wisdom is awareness, so the practice of transforming the mind into air through the two doors of mindfulness and awareness is shown by the example of taming an elephant. The basis on which the mind is placed, like the subtle vajra, is like the firm pillar to which the elephant is tied. The mind that has not been tamed is like an untamed elephant. Relying on mindfulness to prevent the mind from being distracted from the object is like the rope that ties the elephant. If the object as it has been placed is not grasped, immediately recognize it with awareness and place it in a place free from faults, just as if the elephant deviates from the elephant pen, it is restrained by applying an iron hook. Therefore, there are two important points in holding the mind: first, from the beginning, abide without being distracted from the object; and then, if distracted, then...

Once it is realized, it is necessary to create it again as before. Among them, the first is: depending on guarding non-distracted mindfulness, first clearly set the object of focus, generate a strong mindfulness holding of "staying like this," and be non-distracted. Because the method of guarding mindfulness with weak awareness cannot cut off agitation, it is said in the Ornament of Merit: "With wisdom clear and not dull, mindfulness can abide." The second is: depending on the method of guarding with vigilance, after mindfulness has bound it, in a time that is neither too long nor too short, like binding the mind, without relaxing the observation of whether the mind is abiding or not, just be aware, be aware. Here it is also said that if it is too tight, agitation will arise; if it is too loose, dullness will arise, so it is necessary to understand the boundary of being separated from these two and guard it. When the vajra pebble becomes stable, the touch that generates happiness in the tip of the nose or other parts of the body, that is, the difference of the object of touch, in whatever way the body is used for virtuous deeds, it can eliminate unsuitable bodily states and so on, thereby generating physical pliancy. If one is separated from the uncomfortable state of the body, the body will become capable, and thus be able to exert effort. When the body becomes very pliant, mental pliancy can arise, because when the body becomes very pliant, one can experience happiness, and with happiness, the mind can become focused. It is like what is said. Therefore, the Ornament of Merit clearly explains how to generate single-pointed calm abiding based on subtle objects of focus. It is not contradictory to what is said in the Earth Chapter that mental pliancy generates physical pliancy, and from that, calm abiding arises, because here "mental pliancy" is considered to be single-pointed calm abiding, which can be known by quoting the scripture as proof. Here it is clearly stated that calm abiding should be practiced step by step, for the sake of generating physical and mental pliancy. That is, first one must practice until one obtains a good appearance of the deity, and then on this basis, when practicing this, it must be divided into four sessions and practiced continuously for two months, because the Upper Commentary says: "If one practices with four sessions a day for two months, one will definitely obtain the sign." The third is: sections, etc.
