If one cannot ascertain that the refuge is the desire for liberation, and that teachers and the like who are incompatible with this are definitely not refuges, then one will not have a single-minded, firm conviction in one's own refuge. And this also depends on seeing the faults and merits of the two systems through reasoning. Therefore, whether or not non-Buddhists actually exist, if those with great intelligence want to generate a special mind of refuge, they should do as before. Therefore, the treatises on reasoning, such as the Seven Treatises, should be known as the supreme means of generating great respect, not just in words, for one's own teacher, the Buddha, and his teachings, both scriptural and realized, and for practicing them properly. Second, there are two: the general division of vehicles and the great division of vehicles. First, there are four: the way of dividing, the reason for dividing, the nature of each division, and all are shown as limbs of ultimately attaining enlightenment. The first is: In the Lamp for Compendium of Conduct, the three conducts are summarized and divided according to the three inclinations of those to be tamed, namely: for those who are inclined to the inferior, the conduct of detachment is shown; for those who are inclined to the vast, the conduct of karma and the perfections is shown; and for those who are particularly inclined to the profound, the conduct of desire is shown. Similarly, in the Lamp of Three Ways, it is also said: Whatever shows the way of the truth of reality, Whatever is the meaning of the way of the perfections, And whatever is the meaning of the way of the great secret mantra, Is summarized and taught here. Thus, the teacher Kṛpīṭaka Kamala summarized the way of the yogis of the four truths, etc., into three ways. Yeshe Drakpa also summarized the unreserved teachings in the treatise explaining the divisions. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said: The collections of scriptures may be three or two. Thus, the two collections of scriptures of the superior and inferior vehicles are taught. These can also be cited to explain both the division of the scriptures and the division of the paths or vehicles. The second is: Explaining the reason for dividing into two ways. For the sake of the inferior purpose, for oneself alone, one seeks the inferior object to be attained, the state of merely pacifying the suffering of samsara; for the sake of the particularly superior purpose, for all sentient beings, one seeks the superior object to be attained, the state of Buddhahood.

In reality, there are two types of disciples to be trained: inferior and superior. Which vehicle leads these two types of people to their respective states? These two vehicles are called the Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle. The two teachings spoken in terms of these two vehicles are called the collections of superior and inferior vehicles. The Lesser Vehicle has two types: Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The path that leads them to their respective states is divided into the Hearer Vehicle and the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, thus there are three vehicles. The third part has two divisions: the establishment of the Lesser Vehicle and the establishment of the Great Vehicle. The first is: Although Hearers and Solitary Realizers have superior and inferior faculties and results, the establishment of the path is mostly the same, as stated in the "Ground of the Earth." Since detailed differences are feared to be too verbose, here I will mention some of the general establishments common to both. Those who belong to these two types turn their backs on taking on the burden of others' welfare, and therefore enter only for the sake of their own liberation. The main cause for attaining liberation and freedom is the wisdom that realizes the meaning of selflessness, because the main cause for being bound in samsara is self-grasping. Therefore, they also realize this meaning, seek wisdom, and cultivate it with the help of other paths such as ethics and samadhi, thereby exhausting all afflictions. These people do not realize that the person (pudgala) is empty of inherent existence, which is established by its own characteristics from the beginning, but appears as an illusion. Instead, they realize that the person is without a substantially existent self, which is imputed by outsiders. Therefore, the Sutra School and the Kashmiri Vaibhashikas, as well as some Mind-Only and Madhyamika schools, explain this as the meaning of realizing the selflessness of the person. The glorious Chandrakirti says that if this is the case, the belief in the truth of the person will not be reversed at all. Therefore, it is meaningless for such a person to realize the selflessness of the person, because as long as there is a belief in the truth of the person, the grasping of the self of the person will not be reversed. Just as the realization that the aggregates and other phenomena are without inherent existence must be established as the meaning of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, the realization that the person is without inherent existence must also be established as the meaning of realizing the selflessness of the person. Therefore, as long as there is a belief in the truth of the aggregates, there will also be a belief in the truth of the person, and
