This is a reply to the letter you sent. Written by the Shakya monk Lobsang Drakpa Pal (བློ་བཟང་གྲགས་པའི་དཔལ་) at Deura Monastery (ཏེའུ་ར་དགོན་པ) in the Ei (ཨེའི་) region. Roman transliteration: namaḥ śrī guru mañjughoṣāya, Homage to the glorious guru, Mañjughoṣa). Though wisdom pervades all knowable things, beings cannot fathom it; Though love is hidden as a treasure in the heart, it shines clearly in the world like the sun; Though actions are equal for all sentient beings, they cause fear in the hearts of the hordes of demons; May that Manjushri, high with the glory of perfect qualities, protect all beings. Thus, after praising the qualities of the wish-fulfilling deity, and preceding it with auspicious words. With causeless kindness towards all sentient beings, those who have no protector or refuge in the world, whose minds are completely obscured by thick ignorance, who are carried by the great river of existence into the bottomless ocean of suffering, wishing to deliver them and wishing to benefit them, the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-Tathagatas, who wish to satisfy them with the most excellent taste of the nectar they have attained, I wish to briefly describe the manner of abiding in the path where they have manifestly departed: With completely pure morality, peaceful and gentle, Having heard many scriptures, understanding the truth itself, With a firm root of faith, desiring virtue, For the sake of the meaning urged by holy beings. Therefore, the Sugata came into the world, met the precious Dharma, and obtained the leisure and endowment that can accomplish great benefit. The root of all qualities, meeting the supreme spiritual friend, etc., in a hundred ways, like the edge of samsara, arising from the words of the victorious ones endowed with great compassion, and repeatedly contemplating their meaning, not just words, but generating certainty from the depths of the heart, relying on this as a condition. Then, having renounced in the Dharma-Vinaya well-spoken by the Bhagavan, in order to wash away all the stains of not understanding, misunderstanding, and doubt about the profound and vast meaning, making wisdom completely pure through hearing and thinking. For the sake of shaving hair and beard, etc., truly taking the ascetic practices of the King of Dharma, Shakyamuni, seeing liberation or omniscience as the only supreme goal, and diligently striving to accomplish the meaning of extensive hearing.

Having recognized this as the root of wrongdoing, abandon all places of bustle like a compulsory decree. The wind of the virtues of solitude, praised more than once in the scriptures, draws the mind involuntarily, like a cottonwood petal. Having gone to a solitary place, strive for the meanings of what you have heard. By diligently practicing, attain the supreme habit and enjoy the glory of the ocean of joy and happiness without ever diminishing. This is the universal conduct of the noble beings of the past. To this, it is said: The faults of samsara and the benefits of peace, if one is long accustomed to distinguishing them separately, then one will abandon the place of bustle, defiled by many faults, like food mixed with poison. The hundred-petaled lotus, well-opened by the light of the sun and endowed with a sweet fragrance, even if it grows well in the midst of unclean mud, how could it be defiled by a foul odor? Like licking honey on the edge of a razor, for the sake of small gains, those whose minds have gone for the perfections of samsara, how could they be urged by words of peace? Even if the conduct of the swan dwelling happily in the midst of a great lotus lake is repeatedly proclaimed, it will not fall upon the hearts of those crows who are haughty in the midst of filth. Therefore, you have recognized the faults of samsara and peace, you possess extensive learning and listening, you have faith in the belief of karma, you have seen the faults of bustle, you know the virtues of solitude, and you have all the conducive conditions for taking up practice. Having abandoned the mistaken path based on distraction, having abandoned the evil path shown by non-noble beings, what need is there to urge you to enter the un mistaken path based on extreme solitude, the good path shown by noble beings? However, what harm is there in speaking some instructions that are pleasing to the mind and sweet to the ear? Even the peak of the highest snow mountain, when the moonlight of autumn falls upon it, will it not become even whiter? Those of bad intelligence, like those who do not pay taxes to the king when the time comes to pay them regularly, but pay them when the king imposes a penalty, do they have to wait until they must part with relatives, friends, enjoyments, fame, gain, and respect?
