These are the seventeen ornaments of a young virtuous practitioner. That is, the summary made in the Śrāvakabhūmi is: having faith, being unwavering, having few illnesses, diligence, wisdom, having few desires, contentment, being easy to support, being easy to satisfy, diligence in learning, being upright, knowing warmth, recognizing virtuous individuals, signs of the true Dharma, signs of proficiency, patience, determination, and abundance. That is it. The first of the seven types, the ethics of cessation, is: completely accepting never to do things, merely abandoning evil deeds such as killing. The ethics of entering is: merely learning to accumulate virtue and benefit sentient beings for things that must be done. The ethics of universal protection is: constantly guarding both entering and cessation with mindfulness. These three are the classification of the nature of ethics. The ethics that matures the marks of a great person is: entering the causes of accomplishment that are appropriate to the marks of each level. What matures the superior mind is: accomplishing many samādhis of bodhisattvas. What matures the suffering transmigrations is: accomplishing the bodies of gods and humans. The ethics that matures the benefit of sentient beings is: accomplishing the fruits of benefiting sentient beings. Similarly, this is a classification made from the perspective of the fruits of ethics. The first of these four is the accumulation of virtue, the middle two are vows, and the last is the ethics of benefiting sentient beings, as taught by the teacher Guṇaprabha. Among them, six are what qualities one possesses, and seven are the classification of the nature and fruits. This is the view of the teacher Guṇaprabha. The fifth, the ethics of poverty and desire, is: eight, that is, the eight such as killing, which one does not wish for oneself, and wishing for the opposite of those eight, becoming impoverished by realizing what others do not wish for, such as killing, that is, becoming displeasing. Just as oneself, other sentient beings are also like that, by measuring one's own feelings, observing separately, even for the sake of life, one does not practice the eight actions that others do not wish for. The eight things that are not wished for are: killing, not giving, sexual misconduct in desire, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, and contact with hands, sticks, whips, and various forms of harm, the latter three being unpleasant.

It is touch. The eight desires are the opposite of those: longevity, abundant enjoyment, not being bound by a wife, not being deceived, retinue not being separated, hearing pleasant sounds, meaningful words, and pleasing touch. Therefore, the precepts that eliminate the eight undesirable poverties and accomplish the eight desirable aspects are called the precepts of poverty and desire. Sixth, the precepts that lead to happiness in this life and the next are divided into four and five types, making nine in total. Among them, the four precepts are: for things that should be prohibited, which are the cause of suffering for sentient beings, to prevent them; for things that should be allowed, which are not the cause of happiness, to allow them, that is, to accomplish those causes; for sentient beings who have correctly entered the realm of allowance and prohibition, to gather those who should be gathered; and for sentient beings who have wrongly entered the realm of allowance and prohibition, to punish those who should be punished. These four should be practiced with complete purity of one's own body, speech, and mind. The five are: the five precepts that possess the remaining five perfections besides precepts. Those Bodhisattvas themselves and other sentient beings attain happiness in this life and the next, therefore it is called attaining happiness in this life and the next. Among them, generosity enables one to have great enjoyment in the next life, patience enables oneself and others to be the cause of happiness in this life and the next, and in the next life one will have servants and retinue, diligence enables one not to be mixed with non-virtue in this life, and in the next life one will have great joy, meditation enables one to touch happiness in this life, and in the next life one will be born as a pure god, and wisdom enables one to become wise in this life, and in the next life wisdom will be even more superior, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings and so on. Seventh, the completely pure precepts are: the first of the ten, well taken from the beginning, that is, at the stage of the path, wanting to become a monk, and ultimately wanting to attain perfect enlightenment, therefore taking the precepts, not taking them in order to be liberated from the oppression of the king, etc., or for the sake of livelihood. Not being too discouraged, that is, for violating the precepts established by the training rules, regretting a little, or regretting less, not being too dis

English

It is not that there is none, but that there is none and great regret. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "How is one overly dejected? It is like this: some people here have no shame for the objects of training, have little regret, and are lax and negligent." Therefore, the absence of small regret refers to great regret; if there is not even small regret, because there is no small regret, saying that one is not overly dejected would be a reversal. Not being overly indulgent means showing what is not a place for regret; regretting what is beyond the unestablished limits is overly indulgent, so there is none of that. Not being lazy means not indulging in sleep and drowsiness, and the pleasures of lying down, but striving day and night in the direction of virtue. Being possessed of mindfulness means relying on the five branches of mindfulness as previously explained. Having made good aspirations means not being attached to gain and honor, not aspiring to be a god, and not vowing to abide in celibacy. Being possessed of perfect conduct means that the conduct of walking, standing, etc., and the immediate actions of wearing robes, etc., and the virtuous activities of recitation, etc., are not contrary to the world and the Vinaya, and the conduct of body and speech is perfect and appropriate. Being possessed of perfect livelihood means abandoning all the faults of the five wrong livelihoods, such as hypocrisy. Abandoning the two extremes means that when seeking robes, alms, and bedding, etc., whether Dharma or non-Dharma, from others, one is particularly attached to enjoying them and does not see this as a fault, which is the extreme of desire for alms; and sleeping in thorns and ashes, etc., or entering fire and water three times, etc., tormenting oneself and engaging in intense asceticism, abandoning the pursuit of making oneself weary. Definitive liberation means completely abandoning the views of all non-Buddhist schools. The precepts taken are not broken, which means that at all times and in all places, one has no shame for anything, does not consider the objects of training, does not transgress the established limits, and does not commit destructive actions or root downfalls. Thus, ten are briefly stated, but eleven appear in the detailed explanation. To this, Jinasūtra says: How are the antidotes to these two faults established?
