Endowed, becoming happy in this and other lives, completely pure and ninefold, in short, that is morality. As it is said, there are nine aspects. Among them, the nature of morality is the general characteristic. All moralities are the expanded distinctions of its entities. Difficult morality is the uncommon distinction because it enters into what is difficult to accomplish. Morality through all doors is the distinction of where or how it enters. The morality of a great person is the distinction of the agent's basis. Morality of all kinds is the extreme distinction of kinds. Impoverished and desiring morality, as the commentary says, is the function of eliminating suffering, or it is also the two distinctions of object and function. Morality that becomes happy in this and other lives and morality that is completely pure are the distinctions of results, distinguished in order by abandonment and attainment. There are six explanations of the meaning of vows: briefly indicating by nature, explaining extensively by all, extremely distinguishing what is said, the benefits of morality, the collection of morality, and the function of morality. The first has two: nature and its greatness. There are four in nature, the number of qualities is: what is the nature of morality? If summarized briefly, it is endowed with four qualities, namely the quality of taking well and correctly from others, the quality of extremely pure intention, the quality of restoring when damaged, and the quality of generating respect and abiding mindfulness in order to prevent damage. The function of the qualities is: taking from others causes one to think that it is not appropriate to be blamed by others when the cause of violating the training is near, thereby generating fear of wrongdoing. Shame. Pure intention causes one to generate awareness of shame, fearing wrongdoing, based on oneself or one's own Dharma, when the cause of violating the training is near. Restoring when damaged and preventing damage both cause one to become free from regret. Thus, relying on the shame and modesty born from correct taking and pure intention, one will guard morality through the gates of preventing damage and restoring when damaged. If guarded in this way, one will see that one is not associated with transgressions and

There will be no dispute. These have been taught as follows: Those who have taken vows, with the wisdom of proper reflection, no matter how much they examine their own minds, if they see that they are not tainted by any gross or subtle transgressions, then they should generate a mind that is free from regret and is purely clear. To this end, one must first strive not to be tainted by faults from the beginning, and even if one is tainted by faults such as forgetting a hundred times, one should not be indifferent, but should remedy them with confession and restraint. To achieve this, one must have great shame and embarrassment. To generate these, when taking vows, one should take them from a qualified spiritual friend, and the intention of taking them should not be to follow others, but from the bottom of one's heart; it should not be for the sake of livelihood or other base intentions, but should be taken with a noble intention, so one should pay special attention to the first two causes. Although some commentaries explain that one should first take the qualities and then protect the latter three, the root text states that the first two are the cause of protection. The Twenty Vows Sutra also states: "With that noble intention, from a teacher who is steadfast in vows, wise, and capable, one should take them." Therefore, the first two qualities should be summarized as taking, and the latter two as protecting. If one cannot find a teacher, one can contemplate the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and take this vow in their presence, and it will arise. But the sutra says that it must be taken from another, which shows that if one can find one, one must seek a spiritual friend and take it from them, because in this way, joy and respect for protecting the precepts will easily arise, and the precepts will become pure. As the Compendium of Trainings also says: Taking vows should also be received from those who are accustomed to the Bodhisattva's trainings, diligently practice, and have vows. By doing so, if one violates the precepts, one will feel very ashamed and will have the fear of deceiving the teacher, or one will achieve joy and respect without special effort. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, if they wish to accomplish any of the trainings in this training before the Tathagata, should take them properly.
