Because it abides in the realm of what is spoken, holding the oral transmission will hold all its merits. Therefore, from that cause, only the support of speech is said to be the most excellent. Likewise, the benefits of writing and holding are also like this. In that it says: On gro ga wood bark and so on, if this secret tantra is well written, placed well on a precious throne, respectfully offered and held, as long as it exists, thinking with a joyful mind, it is holding all the Buddhas. In short, even for the benefit of merely writing each and every category of the Tathagata's Dharma in a book and holding it, the Bodhisattva Maitreya made this vow: Bhagavan, in the future age, in the last five hundred years of the future time, when the holy Dharma is in decline and the Bodhi of the Buddhas is in decline, when the great decline is in decline, I will fully teach this category of Dharma to those noble beings, I will bestow glory upon them. In whatever place those who hold this Sutra reside, in that place I will pacify all untimely hail, rain, famine, terrible diseases, wars, plagues, epidemics, harm, and conflicts. In whatever place this category of Dharma is held and made into a book, or offered by hanging it on the top of a banner, I will pacify all the terrible aspects of enemy armies, thieves, rakshas, and dakinis by the power of blessing. Wherever there are such speakers of Dharma, and in the place where this Sutra is held, I will bless all crops, wealth, grains, flowers, leaves, and fruits to be complete, and all happiness to arise. Also, in the Suvarnaprabhasa Sutra, it says: Venerable Bhagavan, King Nami, having heard the Suvarnaprabhasa Sutra, said: Venerable, I will always protect those monks who hold this Sutra from all externalist refutations, I will completely save, completely hold, and completely guard, Venerable.

Oṃ. Then the four great kings, we will always protect all sentient beings residing in all the lands of that human king, completely protect them, completely embrace them, completely nurture them, and make them peaceful and happy. Thus they spoke. Especially, when the Buddha was manifestly present in the world, they made offerings to him and served him, rejoicing in his teachings. Nowadays, in this age of the five degenerations, the minds of beings are naturally possessed by the great, though unseen, abode of delusion of the lord of others' emanations. Desire is rampant, hatred is rampant, ignorance is rampant, pride is rampant, jealousy is rampant, all are equally rampant, like the sharp edge of a blade. In this time when many are solely delighted and engage in non-virtuous deeds, to treat the representations of the body, speech, and mind of the Tathagata as insignificant, as ordinary, as mere pictures, as things to be forgotten, and so forth, is to generate service. The way to equally obtain merit is as stated in the Flower Garland Sutra: "Whoever, for a year, a hundred years, or even a thousand years, makes offerings and attends to the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, with all the means of comfort; and after the Tathagata has passed into complete nirvana, offers a few flowers to the relics, or scatters a handful of water, or applies a drop of ointment, or sweeps away fallen petals, or offers ointment, or offers incense, or offers incense sticks, or offers lamps, and after offering, takes a few steps with a joyful heart, reciting 'I prostrate to the Buddha, the Bhagavan,' such a person, like a lion, will be courageous and diligent, and in a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, or even a hundred thousand kalpas, will not fall into the state of evil destinies. There is no such possibility." Therefore, those who are delighted to ascend the chariot of white, increasing merit, should abandon the thought that the field of merit has become small because the actual body of the Tathagata is not present, and generate great reverence for these representations of body, speech, and mind. In particular, regarding the representation of speech, the commentary on the Mother Sutra by the teacher Simhabhadra says: Primarily

The Dharmakaya Tathagata is none other than Prajnaparamita. Therefore, offering to the Mother of the Buddhas who expounds this Dharma will generate immense merit, as it is an offering to the Dharmakaya of omniscient wisdom. Thus, relying on the meaning repeatedly proclaimed in the immaculate scriptures, making offerings, asking questions, reading, explaining, reciting, holding, and using as amulets, etc., merit will increase immeasurably. Thus, most of the ten practices of Dharma also rely and abide in this aspect of writing scriptures, etc. In the Vajrakila World Manifestation Tantra, it says: Writing, offering, giving, and, listening, holding, and reading, explaining, reciting, and thinking, and meditating on them, are the very nature of the Tathagatas, and will attain the unsurpassed Bodhi. Whoever has faith in this, all the qualities praised by the Buddhas will arise. Thus it is said. Now, the story of where the monastery, where the secret tantras abide like an ocean, was built: From that time, after six days and nights, in the great city of Shravasti in the past, our teacher, whose abandonment and realization are inconceivable, the ten powers such as knowing what is and is not, the four fearlessnesses such as the complete enlightenment of all dharmas, the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha such as the Tathagata's lack of error and confusion, all dharmas are without self, but sentient beings do not believe in no-self, therefore, for sentient beings, the thirty-two signs of great compassion such as the arising of the Tathagata's great compassion, the four mindfulnesses such as equanimity of mind for those who listen respectfully, the four fearlessnesses such as the complete purity of the Tathagata's bodily activities, the four distinctions such as the perfect knowledge of each dharma, the six superknowledges such as the divine eye. And the three great miracles, the branches of magical power arising from that state. Having the crown protuberance, etc., the thirty-two major marks.
