On one side, offerings were arranged, and the vow to compose was made in verse: "Being a valid cognizer and wishing to benefit beings, I prostrate to the teacher, the Sugata, the protector. In order to accomplish valid cognition, from all my own treatises, I gather the various scattered points and unite them here." When this was written with stone powder, the earth shook, light emanated, and a great sound arose. Then, a non-Buddhist teacher named Black Conqueror knew that this was an omen. After the teacher had gone for alms, he came and erased it twice. The third time, the teacher wrote as before and added at the end: "If this is for the sake of jest and joking, please do not erase it, as there is a great need. However, if it is out of jealousy, it cannot be erased because it is in the mind. If it is for the sake of debate, then show your body and let us debate." When this was written, he saw it and stopped. Then, the teacher, having placed the teachings as a reward in samsara after begging for alms, engaged in the work of debate. The non-Buddhist was defeated many times, and then the teacher said, "Now you must enter the Buddhist teachings." He became angry and scattered ashes that had been cast with a mantra, and most of the teacher's belongings were burned. The teacher was also almost burned. Then he became sad and thought, "Alas! I cannot even accomplish the purpose of this one non-Buddhist, how can I accomplish the vast purpose of benefiting others?" He thought of peace and vowed to generate bodhicitta in the time it took to throw a skull cup into the sky. Before it fell to the ground, the noble Manjushri showed his face and said, "Son, alas! You have generated evil thoughts because you have encountered an inferior vehicle. Until you attain Buddhahood, I will be your spiritual friend. The assembly of non-Buddhists cannot harm this treatise of yours, and in the future, this will become the one eye of all treatises." So he spoke. Then the teacher also prayed with verses and composed the great treatise "Collected Valid Cognition." In addition, he composed his own commentary, as well as the root verses and commentary on "Examination of Objects," and many other treatises. For a while, he wanted to dance, and after begging for alms in the city, in a clearing in the forest
