etc., he composed extensive treatises. In the monastery called Ushmapuri, King Zamo acted as the patron, gathering all the monks from the four directions, and expounded the Tripitaka and five hundred Mahayana sutras, causing more than a thousand people to become proficient in the sutras and awaken their Mahayana lineage. He raised the banner of fame for the Abhidhamma teachings, which had once seemed to have disappeared, making them flourish again. At that time, King Zamo thought: This teacher is a noble being and is known for knowing the minds of others, so how should I test him? So he consulted with the ministers and the Brahmin people, writing down in secret whether he should be praised or executed, and invited the teacher and his entourage to the palace corridor. He offered them with perfect merit. He hid a black buffalo smeared with white clay in the depths of the house. Holding a golden vase filled with impure substances, filled with honey, and covered with a cloth, he asked: What is in the depths of the house? What is in your hand? The teacher

When he set out to go somewhere, a messenger came saying, "His mother is ill." He developed a longing to quickly return to his homeland. At that time, the teacher said, "If the Brahmin wants to arrive quickly, I can make him arrive quickly." Then he exhaled a breath and made a three-month journey in two hours. When the merchant Dhanarakṣita invited him, he did the same and stayed for a long time in both Kṛṣṇarāja and Oḍḍiyāna (present-day Swat Valley, Pakistan), spreading the Mahāyāna. Between these two places, he built hundreds of stupas and twenty-five temples, each establishing a foundation for Mahāyāna Buddhism. He did the same in Magadha. Once, while teaching the Dharma in a small kingdom near the remote city of Amogha, a Garlog war broke out. He advised his students to cultivate the burden of patience. When everyone remained calm, the arrows that were shot turned to dust. The leader of the army struck the teacher with a sword, but the teacher's body was not harmed, and the sword broke into pieces. Although harsh words like sharp thorns came from all directions, the armor of patience was not damaged in any way. Those people also developed faith, bowed, and left. In order to understand the thoughts of others, all the teachings clearly explained what the students did not understand and were doubtful about. Therefore, there was no one who listened to this teacher's teachings without becoming proficient, and thousands of merits of land and paths were generated. He taught from all aspects, not just one sect, so he became the teacher of countless students of Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna Buddhism. In particular, in the time of Nāgārjuna, the sangha was mostly composed of Śrāvakayāna followers. Even when Mahāyāna Buddhism became very prosperous later, it did not reach the scale of ten thousand monks. But in the time of this teacher, there were tens of thousands of monks who upheld Mahāyāna Buddhism, so he was known as the lord of the Mahāyāna teachings. In his later years, he stayed at Nālandā for about twelve years. When winter came, heretical challengers came every day. He refuted their views with various sharp weapons of reasoning, so that nearly a thousand heretics also converted to Buddhism. Wherever the views of the monks declined

Having completely eliminated defilements, lack of restraint, and all non-ritualistic acts, he made the Sangha exceedingly pure. He made the mere name of the Great Vehicle's manifestation supremely clear, and then he reposed in the sacred city of peace in Rajgir. The ornament of the beautiful world, the master of learned scholars, Vasubandhu, having grasped the sprout of birth, performed the rite of intelligence. Until the power of intelligence was awakened in writing and grammar, etc., he was the same as his elder brother, and having become ordained in Nalanda, he mastered all the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hearers. The Abhidharma and the tenets of the eighteen schools, which became a chariot on the path of reason, in order to ascend to the very peak of that, he attended upon the teacher Samghabhadra in Kashmir. He became proficient in the treatises of the Vibhajyavada, the Sutras of the eighteen separated schools, the distinctions of the different Vinaya texts, the tenets of the six heretics, and all places of logic. There, for several years, he distinguished between reason and unreason, and became the supreme lord of those who speak of the Hearer's Vinaya Pitaka. Later, intending to return to Magadha, he crossed the road without being harmed by malevolent yakshas and thieves. When he saw the volumes of the Five Treatises on the Grounds composed by the noble Asanga in Nalanda, although the youth of his learning was flourishing, he did not comprehend the Great Vehicle because of the narrowness of the Hearer's intellect. Since the wisdom of logic is not friendly with pure appearances, he was completely disturbed by doubt in the place of listening to the superior deity, and he uttered words of contempt for the Dharma and individuals of the Great Vehicle. "Alas, Asanga spent twelve years in the forest, practicing meditation, but without accomplishing meditation, he composed a doctrine that is a burden on the back of an elephant." When the elder brother heard this, he thought it was the time for taming. He had his two disciples hold the Dasabhumika Sutra and the Akshayamati Sutra separately, and instructed them, "The Akshayamati Sutra should come out in the evening, and the Dasabhumika Sutra should come out at dawn." Then he sent them to his younger brother. The two of them did as they were told. Vasubandhu engaged in speculation, and in the evening he said, "This Great Vehicle is good in its cause, but deluded in its result."
