Due to sudden factors such as fright and fear, the meditation that was previously restrained by closeness to virtuous friends, the commitment and focus on the state of clarity and emptiness, the comfortable and joyful meditator, and the experience of calm abiding like a bee stuck to honey, all these focuses disappear. The essence of knowing, in a clear and non-conceptual state, allows all phenomena of samsara and nirvana to naturally abide. Free from clinging to existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, etc., it appears like the center of the sky. This is called "Small Freedom from Elaborations" of Mahamudra. At this time, those with little learning and those not taken care of by a holy guru, because the previous experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality has disappeared, think, "My meditation is lost," and become anxious, with many thoughts, and even feel frustrated. Those who are arrogant think, "There is no meditation, or this is it," and rush into activities for the benefit of others, and are carried away by distraction. At that time, these should be recognized as obstacles, and both discouragement and bias should be abandoned, and a decision about meditation should be made from the present moment of mindfulness. It is important to maintain a state of non-focus and non-error with an unstated neutrality free from the heat of knowing. Second, the middling yogi. As it says in the same text: "The stain of emptiness-clinging, mental dharma experience is cleansed, Whatever arises, memory and thought, without object, rootless realization, That is called the middling path of yoga." This means that the previous clarity and emptiness, like the center of the sky, which transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, after certainty arises about it, the subtle clinging to emptiness is shed like a snake's skin. There is no need to expand any arising thoughts with focused mindfulness; thoughts are self-empty. They arise without basis or root. This naturally flows away in the form of mere mindfulness. Because mindfulness becomes clear and is no different from the ordinary, at this time, the non-distracted, non-meditation is placed at the core of the view, and this is called the "Middle Freedom from Elaborations" of Mahamudra. Third, as it says in the same text: "Appearances are known as mind, and the nature of mind is rootless, too, The stain of emptiness-clinging, a subtle existence, That is called the great path of yoga." This means that when clinging arises through conceptual thought, appearances are mistaken for the magical display of mind. When mind is placed on appearances, appearances and mind are liberated in a state of objectlessness and rootlessness, and a clinging to emptiness arises in one's own nature.
