For the Buddha family, there are four: not fearing Dharma and mundane things, loving-kindness, and giving. For the Padma family, there is one: holding all the sacred Dharma. For the Karma family, there are two: not abandoning those vows, and diligently engaging in offering activities. In total, there are fourteen. Among these vows, transgressing the Three Jewels is a root cause of downfall, which is almost inevitable for most people. Because the essence of the second root downfall of Anuttarayoga requires something that transcends the precepts of any of the three vows. Therefore, the vows here are the precepts of mantra. In particular, the vows of the Vajra family are common with the thirteenth root downfall of Anuttarayoga. Similarly, the root downfall of denigrating those who hold the form of women, such as Vajrayogini, is also common with the fourteenth of Anuttarayoga. Therefore, those who follow the Great Commentary on the Kalachakra and believe that all four tantra classes are related to the fourteen root downfalls, and that the number is fixed and the essence is almost the same, are wise people who are able to measure the boundaries of the vows to be protected. Like this, the etymology of the term "vow" is stated in the seventh chapter of the *Sentence Combination*: "The sacred one is the Buddha, and because it is the word spoken from his mouth, it is the activity of proclaiming the sacred Dharma." It is like that. For its nature, committing with a steadfast mind is called the way of discipline, as stated in the *Later Tantra of the Heart Essence*: "Whoever does not retreat from steadfastness, even in dreams recites the vows, commitment is considered discipline." It is like that. Even so, the fourteen root downfalls of Anuttarayoga are a collection of the only root downfalls from all the upper and lower tantras. Other than that, the fourteen are: "Being completely defeated by others, one should not abandon or discard, it is called a root downfall." It is like that. For guarding such vows, it is advised to be steadfast and diligent: "For one who possesses yoga, death or giving up life is easy. If one does not always guard the vows, then for a person who practices mantras, there is no third place to go besides hell and Buddhahood." As it says in *The Source of Discipline*: "If you want supreme accomplishment, even giving up life is easy, at the time of death."

Coming down is also easy. One should always keep the samaya. Thus it is said. Those who keep the samaya with great effort, even if they do not achieve it in this life due to lack of diligence, they will surely achieve it in the next life or within sixteen lives, as it is said in the fifth samaya: If there is no downfall, it will be achieved in sixteen lives. If it is not achieved in this way, then there will be damage to the mantra, and there is no doubt that it will be accompanied by the downfall of transgressing the words of the Tathagata, so there is no accomplishment of mantra for him. Even if he makes offerings, the gods will not accept them, as it is said in the Moon Secret Bindu: Those who desire the accomplishment of mantra should strive to keep the samaya. Otherwise, the mantra practitioner will not achieve the meaning of mantra and so on. The gods also do not grant acceptance even if they are invoked by samaya,

Should be accepted. Especially the first root downfall is very serious. As it says in the Guhyagarbha Tantra: "The fault of scolding the lama and disturbing his mind is like taking a drop of water from the great outer ocean with a hair. One will experience suffering to that extent and it is known as the Vajra Hell." Therefore, since you now have the power to overcome such faults, you should serve him to the best of your ability in various ways, offer the three circles completely purified, make the lama happy, and receive the empowerment again. If you do not receive it again, you will not be able to restore the vows. As it says in the Kalachakra: "If a root downfall occurs, one should enter this mandala again in order to purify it." If the lama is not present or if it is impossible due to obstacles such as road blockages, then you should repeatedly engage in self-entry until you see signs of the lama's satisfaction in your dreams, and then you will be restored. As it says in the Garland: "If the holy lama is very far away and it is impossible to travel due to obstacles such as difficult roads, then it is possible, but not otherwise." This has been shown. Even so, you must have a strong sense of regret from the bottom of your heart and resolve not to be tainted by downfalls in the future. If you think that even if you commit a fault, it is easy to restore it through empowerment and self-entry, then you are very ignorant. Darika said: "This is for those who vow not to do it again, but not for those who have no intention of keeping the vows. For example, if someone is poisoned and a doctor gives him medicine to counteract it, but he continues to eat poison as before." You should know that this applies to all aspects of purifying faults. Moreover, there is a big difference between not being tainted by root downfalls from the beginning and being restored after correction. As it says in the Sutra of Skillful Means: "Son of good family, for example, if a Shravaka of the Hearer Vehicle commits a root downfall, he will not have the opportunity to attain Nirvana with that body." That is, he will not be able to attain the fruit of Arhat in that lifetime. Similarly, as it says in the Bodhisattva Bhumi: "If a Bodhisattva commits a root downfall, it is impossible for him to attain the first Bhumi in that lifetime." The classification is the same, therefore, the two paths of the Mahayana have a large difference in the stages and few attain the fruit.
