Moreover, those who are well-versed in the Tripitaka, and who have mastered the tantras and treatises of both their own and others' schools of thought, like an ocean, are qualified lamas. It is as if they are also showing contempt for the teachings spoken with consideration for place, time, and circumstances. The third is the spiritual friend who is mingled in the same mandala of empowerment. Even if they are reviled and despised, and specifically excluded, they are still siblings of the Sugata-garbha of limitless sentient beings. Therefore, they are equal to both distant and close spiritual friends. Among these, if one is gathered by the same lama and mandala, they become siblings of the same lineage. Therefore, they are called mingled spiritual friends, which can also be understood from the explanation that 'the place is dangerous, meaning clear and bright.' Also, in the 'Systematic Arrangement of the Stages of Buddha Jñānapāda,' it says: 'The mandala master and the vidyā, with the distinctions of the four empowerments, have distinctions of closeness and specialty.' Śāntipa also said: 'The so-called spiritual friend is one who has received empowerment in the mandala from the same teacher. One should not speak of faults due to jealousy and so on.' In accordance with this specific exclusion, the master Jñānagarbha also said this. Furthermore, all limitless sentient beings are gathered by the same lineage of the Sugata-garbha, so they are common spiritual friends. All those who have entered the Buddha's teachings possess some level of learning, whether great or small, so they are distant spiritual friends. Those who abide by the vows of the Vajrayana are close spiritual friends. In short, in the two divisions of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, there is no sentient being who has not been a parent or sibling. Therefore, the way to abandon contempt is taught in the 'Purification of the Lower Realms Tantra': 'Vajra brothers and sisters, and Vajra mothers, the yogi should not despise them.' However, in the 'Vimalaprabhā,' it says: 'If one becomes extremely angry with an older or younger Vajra brother, or one who possesses discipline...' Therefore, some say that not all sentient beings possess discipline. To this, it is only pointing out the object from which a root downfall arises for those whose minds are completely entangled in karma. Otherwise, one should consider how the Bodhisattva Pitaka teaches to abandon anger towards sentient beings. In particular, if one must view the environment and beings as deities and goddesses in the samaya of the generation stage, then one should also abandon contempt for sentient beings who will become Buddhas in the future.
