One should not submit to the enemy of afflictions. Therefore, as a companion in the asceticism of guarding the precepts, one should offer the seven precious royal possessions that are fitting for the noble king. As the master hero meditates on the conventional bodhicitta: The precious wheel of faith leads the way to virtue day and night; The precious queen of discipline adorns herself with a garland of exquisite beauty; The precious minister of generosity brings forth great power of merit and wisdom; The precious general of learning crushes the enemy of wrong views; The excellent horse of shame and awareness hides the afflictions of selflessness; The elephant of the power of modesty abandons all inverted actions; The precious jewel of wisdom fulfills the hopes of oneself and others; The endless qualities of the noble's wealth, other ordinary wealth is the cause of suffering. So it is. Here, imprisoned in the prison of afflictions, even one's own limits cannot be known, how then can one liberate all beings from that and not diminish the steadfastness of deliverance? Afflictions do not reside in external objects, nor do they reside in the collection of inner faculties, nor do they reside in the realm called the intermediate, but arise suddenly from pervasive conceptualization. If that pervasive conceptualization itself has no place, then afflictions are not form, so they cannot be like a support and what is supported. However, since all sentient beings are naturally trapped in this prison alone, due to causes such as ignorance, even one's own limits cannot be known, how then can one liberate other beings and not diminish the steadfastness of deliverance? In particular, thinking that sentient beings, due to the cause of bad deeds, can never accomplish the benefit of these beings at any time, and giving rise to a peaceful mind, that is the extent of abandonment. Therefore, as an antidote to that: On the ground of possessing mindfulness and awareness, the sprout of bodhicitta is easy to grow, so one should guard it without loss, purify defilements, and diligently practice the means of increasing it. Thus connecting, possessing mindfulness, memory, and awareness continuously is like the earth. From that basis, holding the seed of bodhicitta, one should generate the sprout. So it is said.

Thus spoke the teacher Śāntideva: Those who are afflicted by illness are powerless in all their endeavors. Likewise, those whose minds are disturbed by ignorance are powerless in all their endeavors. Those who possess a mind without mindfulness, their hearing, thinking, and meditation, like water in a leaky vase, do not remain in memory. Even those who are learned, have faith, and diligently exert themselves, due to the fault of lacking mindfulness, become fallen and filled with defilement. The thieves without mindfulness, following in the footsteps of forgetfulness, even if they accumulate merit, go to lower realms as if robbed by thieves. Thus it is said. My gains and honors, body and life are easily lost, and other virtues are easily diminished, but the mind should never be diminished. For those who wish to guard the mind, memory and mindfulness, please guard them with all effort. I thus join my palms in supplication. As it is said, in order to counteract afflictions, generate conscientiousness, and not lose these three: memory and mindfulness, and not just being content with not abandoning them, but also diligently learning the methods to increase and expand them, therefore, one should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend and repeatedly read the collections of bodhisattva treatises. It is also said in the Compendium of Trainings (Śikṣāsamuccaya). Atiśa said that because there were no treatises to read in Tibet, his faith would diminish. Because it has been experienced in the oral instructions, one should always use that method to teach the sole craftsman, and take the ritual with complete characteristics three times a day and three times a night. If one cannot do that, then as it is said in the commentary on the Good Deity: "You who possess great compassion, please listen to me. I, named so-and-so, will separately confess all my sins. I will not do them again." One should take it properly with this thought. Thus it is said. Now, beginning with the precepts of the bodhisattva. First, in order to explain the precepts that prohibit misconduct and their components, especially the classification of the twenty root downfalls: Stealing the property of the Three Jewels, etc., are the five of the king; destroying towns, etc., are the five of the ministers; teaching emptiness to those who have not trained their minds, etc., are the eight of the common people; and abandoning aspiration and engagement. Among them, the five certainties for the king are: From the chapter of the Essence of Space (Akashagarbha Sutra): "Son of good family, the king, the leader of the royal lineage,
