It should be done like this. As taught by the master Śāntideva: Those who are afflicted by illness, Have no power over any actions. Likewise, those whose minds are afflicted by ignorance, Have no power over any actions. Those who possess a mind without mindfulness, Their hearing, thinking, and meditation as well, Like water in a leaky pot, Will not remain in their memory. Those who have heard much, are faithful, And diligently exert themselves, Due to the fault of lacking mindfulness, Will become stained with the filth of downfall. The thieves of non-mindfulness, Following after the loss of memory, Even if they accumulate merit, Will go to the lower realms as if plundered by thieves. It is said, my gains and honor, Body and livelihood are easily lost, Other virtues are also easily lost, But the mind should never be lost. For those who wish to protect the mind, Mindfulness and awareness, All should be diligently guarded, I join my palms in supplication. As it is said, in order to generate the antidote to afflictions, which is conscientiousness, and to prevent the loss of mindfulness and awareness, and not just to avoid abandoning them, but to diligently learn the means of increasing and expanding them, therefore, one should rely on a virtuous friend, and repeatedly read the collections of Bodhisattvas. It is also said in the Compendium of Trainings that when Jowo (Atiśa) said that there were no collections to read in Tibet, his faith diminished. Because he had experienced it in the oral instructions, he should always learn from the sole craftsman of motivation by that method, and take the vows three times a day and three times a night with a qualified ritual. Or, if he cannot do that, he should, as it is said in the commentary of the virtuous deity: O you who possess great compassion, please consider me. I, named so-and-so, confess all my sins individually. I will not do them again. He should take them up properly with this thought. As it is said. Now, from the explanation of the Bodhisattva's precepts, first, in order to show the parts and the whole that should be abandoned by the vows of abstaining from misdeeds, in particular, there are twenty kinds of distinctions of downfall: Stealing the property of the Three Jewels, etc., are the five of the king. Destroying towns and villages, etc., are the five of the ministers. Teaching emptiness to those who have not trained their minds, etc., are the eight of the common people, and abandoning the vows of aspiration and engagement should be abandoned. Among them, there are five certainties for the king, from the chapter of the Essence of Space, son of the lineage, king.

The five root downfalls of one consecrated from the crown of the royal lineage are: these root downfalls will exhaust all the previously accumulated roots of virtue of one consecrated from the crown of the royal lineage, completely falling from the victorious side and the happiness of gods and humans, and ultimately falling into the lower realms. What are the five? Son of the lineage, king, one consecrated from the crown of the royal lineage, if he steals the property of stupas, or the property of the sangha, or the property offered to the sangha of the four directions, or instructs others to steal, this is the first root downfall. Whoever abandons the Dharma and prevents others from abandoning it, proclaiming that the Shravakas will definitely be liberated, or proclaiming that the Mahayana will definitely be liberated, abandoning and preventing others from abandoning it, this is the second root downfall. Whoever, for my sake, shaves his hair and beard, wears monastic robes, whether he has taken vows or not, whether he has broken vows or not, whether he is endowed with discipline or not, takes away their monastic robes, or makes them live in lay life, or inflicts physical punishment, whipping, or imposes fines, or throws them into prison, or puts them to death, this is the third root downfall. Any royal family member who intentionally kills his mother, or kills his father and the Shravaka Arhat of the Bhagavan, or causes dissension in the sangha, or intentionally causes the Tathagata to bleed with malicious intent, that is, commits any of the five inexpiable crimes, this is the fourth root downfall. Any royal family member who slanders without reason, is addicted to the afterlife, adheres to the ten non-virtuous paths, and guides many other beings to also adhere to the ten non-virtuous paths, subduing and guiding them, this is the fifth root downfall. Among them, the first root downfall is easy to understand. The second is: regarding the original words of the Buddha belonging to the Dharma of scripture, namely the three pitakas, and the Dharma of realization, namely the three trainings, or regarding the treatises that explain their meaning and possess the qualities of interpretation and protection, saying "This is not the method to attain liberation" and abandoning them oneself or relying on others. The third and fourth are also
