It is for the sake of ability. Whatever those may be, the time is to protect until the end of life. Among them, what enters into the category of half of the four root downfalls is sexual misconduct, and the distinction of celibacy is stated. In the ritual where King Loving-kindness empowered the five Yaksha brothers to observe the upasatha, non-celibacy is described as sexual misconduct, considering that it is easy for householders to protect. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Because sexual misconduct is extremely reprehensible, it is not done because it is easy and can be obtained." Upasatha is: It is difficult for those who dwell at home to practice celibacy at all times, so for the sake of combining one day and one night of celibacy, the eight-branched upasatha is taught. Among the ten precepts of the ordained, taking gold and silver is allowed for the sake of raising children. The two, dancing and garlands, are counted as one because the fault is small for householders. What is known as the eight-branched precepts, those who constantly protect without interruption are lay practitioners like Candra Gomin (ཙནྡྲ་གོ་མཱི།, Sanskrit: Candra Gomin, Romanized Sanskrit: Candra-gomin, Chinese literal meaning: Moon Protector). For him, on top of the ten things to be abandoned by a novice monk, taking gold and silver is not prohibited for householders, considering the need to raise children. Similarly, dancing and so on, garlands and so on, are counted separately for novice monks, but for householders, they are counted as one because the fault is small. This is what is stated in the Section on Deeds. In reality, other than taking gold and silver, all nine others must be abandoned by those observing the upasatha. But only nominally is it known as the eight-branched precepts. As stated in the Letter to a Friend: "Do not harm, steal, fornicate, lie, drink alcohol, indulge in untimely food, delight in high beds and fine pleasures, and abandon all distinctions of garlands. Those who follow the morality of the Arhats, if they possess these eight branches, the upasatha, the desired enjoyment, and the desirable divine body, will bestow them upon men and women." It means that the result of the one-day and one-night upasatha is that one can be born in any of the six desire realms as one wishes. The commentary says that a branch is a common branch. Thus, the things to be protected by the vow of upasatha, promising to protect for one day and one night, protecting is the characteristic of one's own vow, as stated in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge: One takes it on the day one needs to protect, and after taking it the first time, one does not need to take it again later.

Thus it is said. Laypeople, in order to take and keep vows on the eight fasting days and the four main festivals, have established time-based rules. If laymen and laywomen who possess these precepts take vows, it becomes a posadha, because it increases precepts and purifies sins. Like this, the eight-limbed precepts of near-dwelling, not occasionally kept, but constantly guarded as a basis for merit, are called Gomi's lay followers, like Prince Great Compassion and Master Chandragomi. However, this (school) is not accepted by all Sarvastivadins, but is accepted by the Sthavira school, and Vasubandhu approves of this view. Pages 301 to 400 Celibate lay followers and these two, because they have abandoned household life, are not monks either, and because they have not taken the signs, they are not novices either. In the past, when the teachings were flourishing, the footprints of the great miraculous teacher Chandra seemed to rely only on this kind of individual liberation. Furthermore, those known as lay followers who take refuge in the Three Jewels are called lay followers simply because they have entered the ranks of Buddhists. Because it is only the basis of all vows, and the vows themselves cannot arise from it, the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge also says: It is only good conduct, not vows. However, the Sunyata and Sutra schools consider that even if that is not the vow of a lay follower, it is considered a characteristic of a lay follower, which is reasonable, because the Nirvana Sutra says: Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true lay follower. Novice vows: not killing, not stealing the property of others, not engaging in non-celibate conduct, not lying, not drinking mixed alcohol, not dancing, etc., not wearing garlands, etc., not sitting or lying on high and large beds, not eating after noon, not accepting gold and silver. Holding these ten precepts is its characteristic. The qualities of these precepts are that they are not lost, flawless, unmixed, unpolluted, untainted, independent, praised by the wise, and able to accomplish samadhi, totaling eight. Among them, not being lost means that none of the precepts that have been properly taken have been violated. If one precept is violated, it will also lead to loss; if many precepts are violated, it will become flawed, and the absence of both of these is flawless. Not being mixed with unwholesome elements is unmixed. With existence and enjoyment
