Those who, without possessing the interval (of realization), imitate engaging in the practice of perfect abandonment and realization, whose stream of loving-kindness and compassion has dried up, and who follow after others for the sake of gain and honor. If a madman is entrusted to lead the way, just as he leads people onto the usual non-road, he will lead them from the precipice disguised as Dharma into the abyss of sinful views. In particular, if one does not have more qualities than oneself, but relies on those who are without bodhicitta because of their fame, it is like a blind guide leading everyone into a great error, and one will eventually wander in the darkness of hypocrisy. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the guru, the accumulation of virtuous deeds of the faithful will be wasted, and the rare opportunity of leisure will be deceived, just as one mistakes a poisonous snake and the shadow of a tree. Like this, a blind man leading a blind man is an impossible thing even in the world. Therefore, in any case, the qualities of the disciple must exceed those of the guru. As it is said in the Garland of Friends: "By relying on inferiors, one's purity diminishes; by relying on equals, one remains in one's own position; by relying on superiors, one obtains superior qualities; therefore, one should rely on those who are superior to oneself." Just like that, if the disciple is a practitioner on the path of accumulation, then the guru must be one who abides on the path of preparation. Similarly, for a disciple on the path of preparation, the guru is a practitioner on the path of seeing; for guiding a disciple on the path of seeing, the guru abides on the path of meditation; for a disciple on the path of meditation, the guru must be one who has attained the state of omniscience. If one says that, then is it not related to the fact that the sutras and tantras say that the guru must be regarded as a Buddha? Here, first of all, in the aspect of establishing the relationship between guru and disciple, if there is no distinction in terms of qualities, then after testing, it cannot become a basis for faith and devotion, and accompanied by hypocrisy, blessings will not enter, so one should examine in this way. From the aspect of offering faith and making prayers, it is not to regard the guru as a person who abides on the path. In particular, the precious bodhicitta is the treasury of all qualities, the supreme field of faith. If one is separated from bodhicitta and relies on someone who is merely deluded by superficial fame, then the guru will not observe whether the disciple acts according to the Dharma, but will only look at whether he receives service and respect, thus creating a distinction between high and low, regardless of his intentions and needs.

Furthermore, amidst the meaningless activities of the world, when a disciple finds a rare moment of leisure, the accumulation of virtuous deeds will wither. For example, once an imprudent person mistook a poisonous snake for the shade of a tree at night and rested upon it, resulting in being swallowed by the snake. Therefore, the fault of relying on someone who is not virtuous is like kusha grass wrapped in rotten fish. The Vinaya Sutra says: 'Kusha grass, in the desire of a person, if it is entwined by rotten fish, before long, the kusha grass itself will become like that. Therefore, relying on someone who is not virtuous is also the same.' And, Rigpa Dzin
