Adorned with the splendor of the four means of gathering, relying on gathering the bees of fortunate disciples. In the past, during the auspicious eon, the eon was particularly virtuous due to the teachings of the nectar fruit of Yarlung, etc. The minds of those to be tamed were also naturally virtuous and endowed with merit, so there were noble lamas and many great accomplished ones who attained siddhis through the path of mantra. Therefore, the virtuous friends also possessed all the qualities as described in the profound sutras and tantras, which were all visible. Now, in this degenerate age, there are few individuals who have perfected the qualities of the holy ones. Even if there are, most of them live in concealment. Beings are connected to the power of ignorance and only follow fame. Therefore, the five degenerations of one's own mind become obstacles to meeting a virtuous and holy spiritual friend. If one is controlled by such obstacles, then one must rely on a lama who is a guide to lead students from the state of ordinary beings to the state of Buddhahood. Therefore, if one does not properly examine the qualities before making a Dharma connection, even if the student is fortunate, if one encounters a bad lama who is deceived by appearances, then one will not be allowed to go to other holy individuals. No matter how long one stays with him, one will not develop a single quality. For example, if one makes offerings and prays to a wish-fulfilling jewel, one will receive what one desires, but if one prays to a thorn bush, it will not be the same. In this way, in this world, one should carefully examine even the teacher who teaches marriage and any craft. The eight freedoms and five endowments arise from one's own causes, but if one diminishes the limbs of other endowments and treats the precious human body as ordinary, then one is not a holy spiritual friend. Therefore, one cannot become a guide on the path to omniscience. Here, how should one examine the qualities? One should know and practice without error the acceptance and rejection of the individual paths of the three vows of individual liberation, bodhisattva, and vidyadhara. One should be skilled in the rituals of the four pitakas of the Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidharma, and Vidyadhara, and liberate one's mind through learning. In particular, one should have great compassion and emptiness.

Now, in connection with the special qualities of existence, possessing in their hearts the four means of gathering disciples—giving, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma—and performing deeds for the benefit of sentient beings, this is the same as the actions of the Buddha, and therefore is solely an emanation body. As stated in the Great Drum Sutra: "Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not lament, Ananda! In the future, I will emanate as a virtuous friend and perform deeds for the benefit of you and others." Furthermore, when the Buddha tames beings, he appears as the actual Buddha with a crown protuberance, thereby performing deeds; when he appears as a pandit in the manner of abiding in the fruits of an Arhat, a Non-Returner, a Once-Returner, and a Stream-Enterer, he also performs deeds. It should be known that at those times, he emanates as those individuals, thereby compiling the teachings and composing treatises. Nowadays, in times of the degeneration of the teachings, in order to show the path to liberation and omniscience, he emanates as a virtuous friend and performs deeds, and therefore, from the aspect of essence, he is equal to the Buddha; from the aspect of form, he is dedicated to benefiting extremely afflicted sentient beings who have abandoned being tamed by the actual Buddha, and therefore, in terms of his own nature, he can be regarded as surpassing the Buddha himself in terms of compassion. As stated in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Elements and activities, because of the equality of self and other, are equal to all Buddhas and gurus. For showing the path to whatever beings, he surpasses all Buddhas." In particular, the guru of secret mantra, especially the guru who teaches oral instructions: having received empowerment, abiding in vows, being extremely peaceful, understanding the meaning of the tantras of the ground, path, and fruition, having practiced the meaning including recitation and accomplishment, the signs of accomplishment being complete, liberating one's own mind-stream through realization, possessing immeasurable compassion, seeking only the benefit of others, having few activities and being diligent in the Dharma, possessing great renunciation, and also encouraging others to do so, being skilled in means and possessing the blessings of the lineage. Relying on such a person, accomplishment is swift. The meaning of this is the intention of the great teacher Vimalamitra, who said in the commentary on the Mirror of Illusion: The guru should also be one who has fully received the empowerments of the outer and inner mandalas, whose vows and commitments are pure, who is skilled in the meaning of each of the tantra classes, who has trained in the meaning including recitation, practice, and activities, and who is not deluded by views.
