May I attain the state of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment! This is expressed from the bottom of my heart. Now, since the inhabitants of the southern continent of Jambudvipa rely on coarse food for the sake of their dual existence, those who have entered the path of the teachings, even if they possess only the preliminary, main, and concluding actions in the activity of pure sustenance, will make their leisure meaningful. To steal a living by extremely impure means, to seek more gain through what is gained, to be deceitful and flattering, and to measure value by what is obtained—these five wrong livelihoods will tarnish the ascetic practices of upright practitioners. Therefore, a good dwelling, a good livelihood, and good friends and actions will inspire diligence. In general, wrong livelihood is described in the Lankavatara Sutra: "One should not learn the arts of craftsmanship, nor engage in buying and selling. One should not rely on kings and their sons, as well as ministers and merchants, for the sake of food. One should not eat the food of the dead and newborns, nor associate with those who are happy and friendly. Monks should not mingle with nuns, and yogis should not do so." As it is said. Whatever is done with a mind afflicted by defilements for the sake of livelihood, and whatever is understood as a means of sustenance, is called wrong livelihood. Similarly, to make a living by buying and selling for the sake of gain, to make a living by teaching the Dharma, to make a living by healing, to make a living by knowing divination and the like, to make a living by the application of mantras, to make a living by observing signs, to make a living by astrology, to make a living as a diviner, to make a living by hypocrisy, and to make a living by any unwholesome action, to make a living by giving flowers, fruits, roots, leaves, toothpicks, etc., through manufacturing, sending, these are called wrong livelihood. The commentary on wrong livelihood extensively explains this. Here, five specific wrong livelihoods are pointed out: To beg in front of others with harsh words, hoping to be given something, or to hide food and clothing in a hidden place, pretending to be poor and destitute so that others will know, all that is obtained in this way is an impure livelihood, which is called stealing by means. Seeking more gain through what is gained means first giving others a small amount of food, pretending not to be indebted to them, and then taking more from them later.

Seeking gain through flattery is: In front of others, saying how one has diligently practiced the three aspects of hearing, thinking, and meditating, and the experiences of escaping from merit and noise, and abandoning wealth or possessions, or saying that one has saved the lives of other sentient beings such as fish and deer, or making false excuses that one is making offerings and great virtuous deeds, thereby deceiving others and obtaining benefits. Seeking gain through hypocrisy is: Clearly, one has not guarded one's own nature, is not tamed, is lazy, eats too much, has fallen away from what should be abandoned, and is not impartial, yet in front of others, one pretends to be of peaceful conduct, gentle speech, dignified expression, diligent, not lazy, and upright, or pretends to be indifferent to the eight worldly concerns, with crude behavior, speaking seemingly frankly but with inner hypocrisy, using small inconsistencies and flawed motivations to disguise oneself, causing others to become confused, and then accumulating wealth. Seeking gain through deception is: I received this much wealth or goods from so-and-so patron, and saying that they gave it to me because they saw that I possessed discipline, learning, was skilled in yoga, of noble lineage, ancestry, and origin, with a particularly good dwelling place, and possessed the qualities of a monastic elder. To this, I also accepted it because I had affection for him. Saying this directly, or writing it down, or forcibly taking it even when others do not give it, or complaining that I offer and receive little in remote places, or saying that I have recited this many scriptures and mantras, etc., to calculate the gains. The Blessed One said: The giver gives well, the receiver receives well. Without paying any attention to these words, not only is there no rejoicing in the offerings given by others, but also anger arises towards the small amount of wealth received, arguing incessantly, burning one's own and others' minds, such acceptance is seeking gain through deception. These are all wrong livelihoods, like poison, full of defilement, and a powerful cause for falling into the lower realms, therefore it is better to starve to death than to eat them, such sayings are also common in worldly legends, so they should be completely abandoned. In the teachings on the path of virtue, it is said: One relies on it to eliminate suffering, and with wealth obtained through reason, the mind is content.
