Pa. As it is taught, "One will not be harmed by the fault of a non-virtuous livelihood." Like that, not being conquered by the mind of seeking gain, having a sense of shame and embarrassment, and not engaging in begging by bowing and flattering others, but sustaining life through the practice of pure begging, this is what is called reasonable. It is extensively taught in the Sutra of Pure Livelihood. As the Bhagavan said, "Seeing the faults of seeking gain, one would also exclaim, 'Alas!' Thinking that one is far away from the mind of seeking gain is good, and one should not grieve over it." Just as it is taught. Similarly, in the sutra it says, "Giving meat and alcohol, giving poison and weapons," extensively revealing the faults of giving in an inappropriate manner. What need is there to mention the one who enjoys it? In the Lankavatara Sutra, it says, "Great Wisdom, my noble Shravaka disciples do not even eat ordinary food, what need is there to mention the unlawful food of meat and blood? Great Wisdom, I have the perception of all sentient beings as if they were my only child, how could I allow my disciples to eat the flesh of my child? What need is there to mention eating it myself? My allowing my disciples to eat it, and myself eating it, this is not reasonable, Great Wisdom." And it says, "For the sake of profit, they kill sentient beings. For the sake of meat, they give wealth. Both of these are sinful, and will be imprisoned in places of wailing and so on." And it says, "In the Nirvana Sutra, the Angulimaliya Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra, I have completely condemned meat." And it says, "In the future, foolish meat-eaters will say, 'Meat is without sin, it is permissible, the Buddhas have said.'" This clearly shows the meaning of the special prohibition in the Mahayana scriptures, that even the three kinds of pure meat, which are cited as a basis for permissibility, should be abandoned because of doubt, and that one should only pursue this way. In that sutra, it says, "The three kinds of pure meat are those that are not investigated, not requested, and not instigated, therefore one should not eat meat." Thus it is said. To claim to be a Mahayana practitioner and only pursue the consumption of meat and alcohol is another tradition, and we who follow the compassionate teacher would not do so.

One should solely accept the protection of sentient beings, and also remember the faults of drinking intoxicating beverages as taught in the Jataka of Hundredfold Generosity. Now, in order to extensively explain the manner of relying on a noble person, and in order to perfect the qualities of all trainings, one should rely on noble persons. Just as in the forests of Malaya, even ordinary pieces of wood that wander about, like the fragrant scent of sandalwood with moist branches, follow whoever they rely on. One should examine in this way: distinguishing between virtue and vice, Dharma and what resembles Dharma, and knowing without confusion the objects of training from refuge to liberation, arises from relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Just as in the great medicinal forest mountain, Rimala, even if an ordinary piece of wood wanders about, after a while, the fragrance of sandalwood permeates it, becoming like sandalwood and creating confusion. Similarly, childish, individual beings, like thorny trees full of defilements, with untamed and fierce branches that are unpleasant to look at, like burls on a tree, with mistaken acceptance and rejection, stingy towards giving, craving for existence, fallen from the asceticism of patience, claiming the wrong path as the path, claiming the wrong fruit as the fruit, beings like cattle who lack the fragrance of morality and the qualities of meditative stabilization, also enter his path by relying on a noble person. For example, the Brahmin boy, No Harm, holding a garland of fingers, after killing nine hundred and ninety-nine people, even wanted to kill his own mother, and also intended to harm the Tathagata, but by hearing the Teacher's excellent Dharma and following it, he realized the truth. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "Like vines on Sala trees, those who rely on the virtuous, are embraced and surrounded by the splendor of goodness." The characteristics of one to be relied upon are: the entirety of the excellent Dharma is complete, although it is difficult to find due to the power of the degenerate age, on the pure ground of the permissibility and prohibition of the three vows, the mindstream is moistened by hearing and great compassion, skilled in the rituals of the ocean of the three baskets and tantras, rich with the fruit of stainless wisdom of abandonment and realization.
