Commentary on Chapter Five. Commentary on Chapter Five. Now, in order to show the four great wheels at the beginning of the path of the great vehicle, the supreme being, the all-knowing, it is said: Rely on suitable places, obtain qualities from associating with virtuous individuals, aspire to good wishes and merit, seek refuge, the Dragon King considers these the four great wheels. This is a general indication. For example, just as the path that livestock and elephants take many days to traverse is cut short in an instant by the journey of a chariot lifted by the illusion of four wheels, bodhisattvas who travel on the chariot of the noble path must possess four great wheels in order to reach the state of omniscience. What are these four? A suitable place is one where the mind is at peace, there is no disharmony, and it is free from harm and fear. Relying on a virtuous individual means possessing the qualities of complete scripture or realization, or like a lama, or like a friend, trustworthy, eloquent, able to endure words, and able to explain profound meanings. Because speech is the source of all faults and virtues, as it is said in the Letter to a Friend: The Victorious One said that pleasing, truthful, and false words, for those who have false words, are like honey, flowers, and impure things. Abandon the last one. Pleasing words are like honey that touches the heart, truthful words are worthy of praise, like flowers, possessing both qualities. False words are to be condemned, like impure things, abide in the truth of abandoning false words. If one follows these teachings, discipline, learning, generosity, and wisdom will increase, and one will be liberated from inappropriate behavior, such a person is called a virtuous individual. Good wishes mean accomplishing good deeds by doing as one has said. Aspiring to the refuge of merit means possessing the accumulation from past lives to the present. As the Dragon King said: Abiding in a suitable place, relying on a virtuous individual, one's own good wishes, and having accumulated merit in the past, you possess the four great wheels.

Mnga'. The last verse shows that even the enjoyment of a king is a vessel for the noble path. Now, in order to distinguish its nature in detail: In the midst of a crowd, like poisonous food, the changes in environment and circumstances are very intense. Withdrawing from that, one delights in solitude and peace. Not attached to gain, like the wind and the sky. Like this, whether it is a royal palace, a city, a town, a village, or even a monastery used in degenerate times, it doesn't matter. In the midst of many people gathered, there are enemies and friends, love and hate, prejudice, strife, commerce, agriculture, noise, fame and gain, distraction, jealousy, competition, arrogance, accumulation, protection, expansion, and so on. These are the circumstances of being close to the environment, being deceived by the three poisons of attachment, anger, and ignorance, and being the source of all defilements. As Vasubandhu said: If one has not abandoned subtle increase, and the environment becomes close, then, due to improper attention, the source of defilements will be complete. Like the monk Bhadra, who was very firm in guarding his vows, when faced with a married woman who wanted to sleep with him, he strongly prevented her, saying, "I am guarding my vows, do not stay here." But she did not listen. The firmness of vows is also a fabrication, and the poison of the environment is very powerful. As a result, attachment arose, and he engaged in misconduct with that married woman. Therefore, even if one has entered the gate of the Dharma and has a firm desire for renunciation and guarding vows, when encountering various kinds of circumstances, the cause for the arising of discipline, samadhi, and wisdom, and all qualities will be lost. Like this, taking a place as a permanent home, taking land and territory as one's own. Being overly attached to a dwelling, abandoning a small home, one builds a larger mansion. Seeing material wealth as important, even competing with wealthy householders for horse fodder, wasting offerings, donations, and the wealth of the deceased solely for the sake of gain is not good. The sutra says: Maitreya, in this regard, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should understand that gain and respect are likely to generate attachment. Gain and respect
