One should examine how to destroy evil arrogance. As it is said in the scriptures, attachment to gain and respect completely abandons meditation and the four immeasurables, and causes beings to fall into the realms of hell, animals, and Yama. One should reduce desires and not be completely distressed. As it is said, one should not be attached to gain, like the wind in the sky; without clinging to places and seeking, like a bird soaring in the sky, one should cultivate the path of peace. Stay away from crowds and be extremely inclined towards peace. Not attached to gain like the wind in the sky; like a wild animal, wander alone without fear. Such a person is a true holder of the Dharma. Again, it is said that living in solitude like a wild animal will not be disturbed by frivolous behavior. If you rely on a place, you will have to protect the faces of others and reduce the courage of jealousy and patience. Therefore, a solitary place or a sacred forest is a place where the nature of behavior is extremely gentle and peaceful, and cannot be disturbed by any hundreds of thousands of faults of noise and frivolous indulgence. If you live in one place, you will suffer from the pain of taxes and levies dependent on that place, or you will have to watch the faces of others in order to protect yourself and be perfect. Even if one becomes famous for practicing the Dharma, or becomes rich because of causes and conditions that are in harmony with one's nature, the discrimination of sentient beings in the degenerate age is extremely untamed, and seeing them repeatedly harass with various intolerant behaviors, our asceticism of patience will also be reduced. Therefore, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas praise only the virtues of forests and monasteries. As it says in the *Moon Lamp Sutra*: After becoming a renunciate, no matter how one practices the Dharma, one will not serve and respect the most excellent Victor with food, drink, clothing, flowers, incense, and garlands. If someone, for the benefit of sentient beings arising from evil actions, turns towards a monastery and abandons seven steps, this is more excellent in merit than the former. Therefore, the extremely pure and joyful forest is easy and happy, without distraction.

Everything is pacified, abide alone. ( इति ) Thus it is said, and it will be explained in detail below. The mind is like an extremely stiff cat, its movements are peaceful, and its behavior is dignified. A place where one relies on the carelessness of bad friends, even if it is perfect, one will immediately fall away from the Dharma. Just as a cat's mind is extremely difficult to tame, very stubborn, and has the nature of harm, but is skilled in walking and dwelling, and its behavior is gentle and dignified, wherever there are people with evil thoughts, who hold wrong views on cause and effect, do not trust the Three Jewels, and only trust in evil, those who only aim to temporarily eliminate obstacles and show respect to the Dharma and practitioners, the places possessed by them, and those who serve and honor beginners without being held by skillful means and compassion, even if they associate with them and regard them as friends, those people also like gambling and so on, gather at dissolute banquets, dislike virtuous deeds only because of laziness, possess the enjoyment of wine, which is a container of many faults, wander from one house to another at night, and only like non-virtue, because they are evil friends, that is, favoring them, they will fall away from the Dharma. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Gambling and watching gatherings, laziness, relying on evil friends, drinking and wandering at night are places of downfall, fame is damaged, therefore these six should be abandoned. These six are the cause of downfall, therefore they are called downfall, which is named after the result. The Sutra says: Sons of householders, these six are the gates of downfall. Here it is explained that these all exist in one evil friend. The sun and moon, which move lightly, are friends with everyone, the place where they are familiar and constantly dwell is troubled by anger, the place that is new and constantly changing is gentle, and it is seen that all beings become friends. The sun and moon do not stay in one continent, but rotate around Mount Sumeru day and night, and the beings of the four great continents are all delighted by this, similarly, those who act according to the Dharma, wherever they are, once they become familiar with people and become friends, they will immediately go to other places, therefore they will not cross the mountain of attachment and aversion, and they will please everyone.
