Those who enjoy arguing are signs of not having accumulated merit in the past. Conversely, those who are not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sinful thoughts, have few internal and external obstacles, and even when doing good, possess discerning wisdom and are able to utilize their intelligence, are signs of having accumulated merit. To illustrate this, (the scripture says:) Without cultivation, reason declines and comes, With pride inflated, wealth declines and comes, With extreme hatred, virtuous gatherings decline and come, With attachment, true nobility declines and comes. Why is it that karma, afflictions, and sins, Do not disturb the intelligence, Which can be utilized by the power of wisdom and fortune, Is said in the scriptures to be a sign of accumulating merit. This is connected together with the source of the scripture. Therefore, having merit as a common cause is also a special quality of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, so what need is there to say for those sentient beings who seek special and meaningful positions? For example, in the Jataka tales, the king named "Power of Light" had five sons, namely, Power of Appearance, Power of Diligence, Power of Craft, Power of Wisdom, and Power of Merit, each named after their respective qualities. All five sons each insisted on their own aspects of merit and praised them. At that time, the youngest, Power of Merit, said: Without wisdom, appearance, craft, and diligence are of no benefit. Although having wisdom is beneficial, wisdom cannot be obtained without merit. Therefore, merit is beneficial. (The scripture also says:) Merit obtains a good appearance, Merit possesses discipline, Merit obtains glory, Likewise, one becomes wealthy. Merit obtains wisdom, Merit obtains a tamed mind, Merit obtains a good rebirth. And so on, although it is said that all the virtuous gatherings of samsara and nirvana are the power of merit, the companions each insist on their own aspects and do not acknowledge this. After that, in order to distinguish their respective qualities, they hid the appearance of the king and went to other places. When they saw a young and handsome man,

Those who are attracted by virtue live merely by enjoying what they obtain. Those with diligence, like a swift river carrying sandalwood, which others cannot obtain, are guided by the great power of diligence, and live merely by enjoying what comes from it. Those with craftsmanship live merely by the wages they receive from it. Those with wisdom live merely by the gains they make by skillfully reconciling two quarreling merchants. As for the power of merit, when he entered the house of a poor man, due to the power of his merit, much wealth, grain, gold, and silver appeared in that house. The poor man thought, 'This person whom I did not know before has come to my house, surely he brings good fortune,' and he respectfully regarded the young man and gave him great hospitality. When these reputations spread everywhere, for a time the king of that country had no son and was near to being without descendants. The queen, ministers, and chiefs of the city gathered and discussed who should be enthroned as king, who had the greatest merit. They immediately recognized him and enthroned him as king. Because his merit and actions were combined, that territory also touched a state of well-being. His own father, the king, also heard of this and placed the young man, Power of Merit, in charge of the wealth of the kingdom. Therefore, in the world, nothing is more beneficial than merit, so one should rely on special places and strive to accumulate merit, in order to ripen the fruit in this very life. What is that? One hundred years after the Buddha passed into nirvana, in the city of Pataliputra, there arose a king named Ashoka, who ruled over a quarter of the realm of a universal monarch, who at first delighted in non-virtuous deeds, and later greatly revered virtue. He sent five hundred merchants to the sea to collect jewels for the sake of wealth. They went to the sea and filled a large ship with gems, gold, silver, diamonds, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, and so forth, and set sail towards Jambudvipa, and in the middle of the sea, the nagas (dragon)
