Not burned by fire, not frightened by wind, merit is not soaked by water, like the earth, it cannot be carried away. Kings and thieves cannot steal merit; merit abides. Neither men nor women can take it away. Merit is a treasure that generates happiness; it will not be left behind here, but will follow wherever one is born. Thus it is said. Therefore, merely regarding merit with respect should not be focused solely on temporary happiness, but rather one should generate a great spirit of diligence towards the Dharma. The armor of faith in the Dharma should be strong. The profound and vast realm of Dharma is like an ocean. Whether one can draw (this bow) or not, one must let the power of diligence be the master. Such people do not stray from the path, but walk on the six perfections. Our teacher also, in order to generate the mind on the great path of Bodhi, accumulated merit for countless eons, practiced diligently, and thus reached the other shore of the assembly of supreme wisdom, finally attained enlightenment and became the protector of all sentient beings. We, too, in order to accomplish that same state, no matter what happiness or suffering, good or bad circumstances may arise, even if death approaches, or we encounter wild men and beasts, we must, like a merchant who does not fear dangerous lands, or a captain who enters the ocean, not be defeated by adversity, but wear the armor of diligence. Whether it is the Dharma that is as profound as the ocean, or the Dharma that is as vast as the sky, one must cut off all faults of shrinking from both aspects and of base behavior. Just as the bow of Indra, even the giants of the four continents cannot draw it, therefore, one must cut off the thought of being overwhelmed by the feeling of being incapable, and rely on the power of diligence. For example, the captain Solangden, in order to find jewels, wanted to dry up the ocean, and so he persevered in scooping up water with his hands and pouring it out. This unremitting diligence made the dragons of the ocean afraid, and they offered him jewels. Such a person walks unfailingly on the six perfections. The corresponding favorable conditions are the seven-branch offering, and all the methods of accumulation and purification, such as water offerings.

The discordant party will not trample on it, and walking on the road relies on meritorious deeds. This is the ladder to the path of a great person. The six perfections are the main road to the Great Vehicle. Just as traveling far requires food, methods to restore strength, and various rituals to protect against enemies and thieves, here, the components of meritorious actions, such as taking refuge, the seven-branch prayer, the mandala offering, and water offerings, need to be accumulated and purified extensively. If the thought of accumulating merit arises and one believes that the results of merit are not deceptive, then even those afflictions called wealth and enjoyment have a human body as a basis. From its accumulation, it is sufficient that in Tibet, relying solely on pure water, one offers and donates to pure fields with vast intention. Because in India and other places, due to the intense ground heat, only turbid water can be found, and it is difficult to find any that is pure. Therefore, do not be attached to objects and utensils, but regard one's own faith and diligence as flawed, rejoice in the virtues of others, make offerings with ownerless flowers and fruits, use the body to offer and donate, plant flowers and temple gardens, water fish harmed on dry land, and give fearless donations to ponds and canals that have become harmful places, where small creatures tremble and fear due to the fear of life. In the tantra it says: Om, jnana, avalokite, namah, samanta, spharana, rasmi, bhava, samaya, maha mani, duru duru, hridaya, jvalani, hum. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་ཛྙཱ་ན་ཨ་བ་ལོ་ཀི་ཏེ་ན་མཿས་མནྟ། སྥ་ར་ཎ་རསྨི་བྷ་བ་ས་མ་ཡ། མ་ཧཱ་མ་ཎི། དུ་རུ་དུ་རུ། ཧྲྀ་ད་ཡ་ཛྭ་ལ་ནི་ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ ज्ञान अवलोकिते नमः समन्त स्फरनरश्मि भव समय महामणि दुरु दुरु हृदयह्वालनि हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ jñāna avalokite namaḥ samanta spharaṇaraśmi bhava samaya mahāmaṇi duru duru hṛdayajvālanī hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, wisdom, Avalokiteshvara, Homage, Universal, Radiating, Being, Vow, Great Jewel, Duru Duru, Heart, Flame, Hum.) Then, all the pretas seen by the eyes of the Buddha will obtain the taste of heavenly food and the best taste of drink, and each preta will be nourished with food and drink equivalent to seven measures of Magadha.
