Those great merchants returned with only the remnants of their lives. The king, with the reason of desire, adorned and decorated the garden, prepared a vast place for displaying various jewels, and all the inhabitants of the city gathered to see the jewels. At that time, the merchants, possessing only a single upper garment, came before the king in a miserable state and told him the reason for it. Then, a monk named Deva instructed the king, writing on a copper plate: 'This land is protected by the surrounding ocean. The king is the powerful Ashoka (c. 304–232 BCE), extremely fierce and mighty. Whoever dwells in the sea carrying treasures, quickly bring them to my presence.' After writing these words, he threw it into the ocean. The Naga king, displeased with the king's words, threw the copper plate back to Jambudvipa. Then, the messenger recounted the situation to the king, and Ashoka, understanding in his heart, began to contemplate a solution. At that time, a god in the sky said: 'If you make offerings to the stupa of gods and humans, the relics of the Tathagata, it will increase merit and your needs will be fulfilled. No other mantra or medicine can accomplish this.' After speaking these verses of meaning, the king washed his hair, put on white clothes, and holding incense, garlands of flowers, etc., prayed and invited those who had attained the ten directions of miraculous powers, making a great cry of lamentation. Immediately, sixty thousand Arhats gathered from all directions. There, the king made great offerings to the relics of the Tathagata with incense, flowers, perfume, unguents, etc., and praised them with verses, and also offered umbrellas to the Sangha of monks. At that time, the venerable Deva said to the king: 'Great king, first is your body, and second is the body of the Naga. Place these two beautiful bodies in a large golden vessel, and you will directly see the excellence of merit.' The king did as he was told, and after a while, he looked, and the Naga

The form of was present. The king's form was seen paying homage to the nagas. Then, the venerable Upagupta said, 'Great king, please continue to strive for the cause of merit, and you will see different sights each day.' When he said this, the king continued to make great offerings to the relics of the Thus-Gone One and to the sangha of monks, and he listened to the Dharma with reverence. As such, when the king's form stood up, the form of the naga paid homage to him. Eventually, the form of the naga paid homage to the king's form with all its limbs, and the king was very pleased and said, 'Alas! What kind of fruit is the offering to the Three Jewels? Look at this! The nagas who dwell in the ocean have been tamed by me and are under my control. Even people of small intelligence, who would not worship the Buddha? Who would not immediately produce fruit? Who would not think with their minds? Gods and humans who desire to obtain great self, should truly worship the perfect Buddha, and birth will be exhausted and there will be no rebirth.' Then, the venerable Upagupta, knowing that the king's merit had become strength and that the time had come, urged the great king, 'Now is the time to send the copper letter to the nagas.' The king, as before, sent a messenger to send the letter to the ocean, and the naga king took the letter with his head and promised to send back the previous jewels. Then, when the king was preparing to send the merchants, the elder Upagupta instructed, 'On the copper plate, write: 'As a punishment for breaking the sacred command of the lord of Jambudvipa, carry your respective burdens on your shoulders and bring them here.'' As soon as he saw the letter, the naga king became frightened and said, 'If that is the case, I will come with seven umbrellas.' After he promised, in the midst of all the people of the city gathered, the king was sitting on a lion throne, and the naga king and his retinue transformed into human form, carrying the burdens of jewels on their shoulders, and paid homage to the king's two feet. Therefore, praising the qualities of the command of the Bhagavan: the fire of merit
