Thinking it's like how in a previous life, relying on Devadatta, he perfected the six perfections. As it says in the White Lotus Sutra: The Blessed One, having become a king, made aspirations for perfect enlightenment, and his mind did not waver. To perfect the six perfections, he gave up his kingdom, possessions, even his head and limbs. When he began to seek the Dharma, he rang a bell and vowed: Whoever teaches me the Dharma, I will be his servant. Devadatta transformed into a sage and taught the White Lotus Sutra. He felt joy and delight in this, and from being the sage's servant, fetching firewood, water, digging up roots, tubers, fruits, etc., even to being a gatekeeper, he did it all. At night, he even held the legs of the bed. Although he did this, his body and mind did not tire, and a full thousand years passed. The Blessed One said: Bhikshu Devadatta is also my virtuous friend. Relying on Devadatta, I perfected the six perfections. From then on, he extensively explained how he perfected all the aspects of enlightenment by relying on Devadatta. To the bhikshus, he said: You should have faith, you should understand. And, in the world called Heavenly Ladder, he prophesied that he would attain Buddhahood in the Buddha-field called Heavenly King Tathagata. Therefore, from the beginning, one has the autonomy to examine, and even in the explanation of a single verse, there is no room to find fault. As it says in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: By relying on a lama, one understands that virtue increases and non-virtue decreases, therefore, towards the khenpo, whether learned or unlearned, wise or unwise, moral or immoral, one should generate the thought of seeing him as the Buddha. Just as one feels joy and faith towards the Buddha, one should also feel faith and joy towards the khenpo. One should generate respect and service towards the teachers, and relying on them, the unfulfilled accumulations for enlightenment will be fulfilled, and the untamed afflictions will be tamed. Thinking this, one will obtain joy and delight, and for virtuous Dharma, one should act in accordance with it, and for non-virtue, one should act contrary to it. The latter part of this meaning has already been explained. Furthermore, in the Fierce One's Question Sutra, it says: Householder, if a Bodhisattva

Reciting and striving to recite, thereby possessing generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, or from whom did you hear or receive the four-line verse that possesses the accumulation of the Bodhisattva path's resources? One should show Dharma respect to the teacher from whom one has received the transmission. If one were to find that teacher without wavering for as many eons as there are verses of names, words, and letters that were taught, and serve with reverence, offerings, and all services, then the householder should still completely respect the teacher as a teacher, let alone disrespectful respect. In short, the reduction of one fault of the disciple and the generation of one virtue depend on relying on the lama. Therefore, one must first be skilled in finding and examining the lama; secondly, it is not enough to merely find him, but one must also be skilled in the methods of relying on him; and finally, it is not enough to associate with him naturally, but one must also learn the conduct of holy beings and the path of liberation. As it is said in the Ornament of the Samantabhadra's Array, the Blessed One, during the three countless eons, wandered through all the worlds in order to seek a spiritual friend, to the point that his feet were worn down to his hip bones. And as it is said in the Wise and Foolish, the king lit a thousand oil lamps on his own body for the sake of the Dharma. And the liberation of Sudhana from the Array of Trees, the liberation of Sadāprarudita from the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, and just as the powerful Trisong Detsen (742-797) endured all difficulties for the sake of the spiritual friend and the Dharma, even to the point of putting pressure on the people. In the Sutra of Four Dharmas, it is said: "Monks, Bodhisattvas do not abandon the spiritual friend even for the sake of their lives." Thus, one should cherish the spiritual friend more than life and learn from his thoughts and actions. Thus, the lama is said to be the embodiment of the Buddha in all the profound Sutras and Tantras, therefore, learning the liberation of his body, speech, and mind is equivalent to learning the liberation of the Buddha. Therefore, we too should think: "I too must become like him," and thereby listen.
