Therefore, this teaching on not mixing with distractions arose. As it is said in the Jataka tales: "The noble ones are not bought by anyone, They show virtue in a gentle manner. Near them, the dust of their qualities, Even without intentionally touching, will be covered." Like this, not understanding, Most ignorant people draw images and meditate. For the one who is actually present, there is no service. Saying they meditate on the true nature, they do not know the guru's mind. Practice and what is to be practiced contradict each other, how foolish! Without devotion, it is strange to meet in the bardo. In Tibet, not to mention seeing the guru as a Buddha, They do not even see them as good Geshes, Some people, without any reason to see them that way, draw images because of worldly fame and the accidental nature of ignorance, Making statues, Reciting the methods of meditation, And making external supports of copper, Gold, Silver, etc., most of them are only concerned with protecting fame and seeking benefits with bad intentions, Why? Because the way of approaching and the direction of the one who is actually present are completely contradictory. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: All dharmas are conditions, They completely abide in the root of intention. Therefore, without devotion and pure appearance, generating confused and material concepts, making images, etc., It is more superior to naturally see the unobstructed image of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in all sentient beings. Similarly, empowerment, Instructions, and the recognition of truth come from the guru, Otherwise, thinking that blessings and accomplishments come from some place is a big mistake, Because seeing the guru and yidam in the bardo is also the self-nature of devotion and clear appearance, the guru does not actually come to the bardo. For these reasons, First, be skilled in examining the guru, In the middle, be skilled in relying on the guru, Finally, be skilled in learning the guru's view and conduct, That person will go on the right path. As it is said, nowadays the times are very degenerate, In a time when life, wealth, dharma, and guides are all degenerate, it is very important to examine the guru very carefully at the beginning, And also because of the power of the times, all qualities

If not found completely, Dpung bzang requested: Those who possess all such qualities are extremely rare in times of strife, so those with half, a quarter, or an eighth of the qualities. This is an explanation of the definition of a friend, which can be compared to a lama here. Therefore, from the definitions spoken of in the sutras and tantras, half, a quarter, or even an eighth is impossible to lack. If such a one is not found, and if a student is very intelligent but engages in actions contrary to the three vows, or leads and connects to non-paths, then for a while, through skillful means, it is possible to turn them away from that path. As it says in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: For virtuous dharmas, one should act in accordance with them; for non-virtuous ones, one should act in discordance with them. And in the Vinaya Sutra: If one speaks of non-dharma, one should turn them away. And in the Jataka of the Brahmin's Birth: In order to examine the conduct of the disciples, the teacher said that stealing was dharma when the Brahmin was in decline. In the world, having no wealth is the greatest decline, therefore, do not take the wealth of others when you see it. If you steal openly, your reputation will be damaged; stealing secretly is the Brahmin's doctrine, there is no fault. After saying this, the ordinary Brahmin disciples, although knowing it was unreasonable, did not dare to contradict the teacher's words, but the Bodhisattva did not rejoice in this, saying: You have entered in this way for the sake of wealth, I will not hold it in my mind, having known the difference between faults and qualities, who would abandon qualities for the sake of wealth? Even for the power of the gods, having abandoned shame, doing things contrary to the Dharma in one's mind, it is better to carry a clay pot, wear ragged clothes, and be easily satisfied even when seeing the wealth of enemies. After saying this, the teacher gave his approval. As it also says in the Jataka of Indra's Birth: Therefore, those who practice Dharma should protect the nature of Dharma. And so on, widely spread in Jambudvipa. However, if one uses this as a reason to despise and denigrate those who are regarded as lamas by ordinary people, that is never reasonable. Because after the connection with Dharma and vows, whether good or bad, one will suffer great harm oneself, so one must be skillful in relying on them. As it says in the Gongdu: Once regarded as sacred, sacred
