One should not speak without restraint. As it says in the Ornament: "Arrogantly filling oneself with harsh words, one will fall into hell for a thousand eons. By distorting the profound points of the noble Vajra Master, one will fall into the Avici hell." Also, as it says in the Tantra of Secret Sameness: "If one speaks with the conceited thought that one is superior to the supreme Lama, one will fall headfirst into hell for countless thousands of eons." What need is there to mention gossiping and so on? Even if one just jokes, there are many conclusive reasons for the failure of interdependence, as it says in the Secret Play: "Whoever gossips and ridicules others will suffer in the Vajra Hell. Even in jest, one should not slander. One should truly guard against the faults of speech." Like this, towards noble people, at first one pretends to be very respectful and offering, like treating a new guest, but soon after one becomes tired of them, seeing them as companions, or becoming disrespectful due to being too familiar. This is a sign that one has not obtained or seen even a small part of the noble Lama's qualities of abandonment and realization, and that one has not received even a single blessing, but is merely seeing them as the same as oneself due to the ignorance of delusion, like a person who throws away a wish-fulfilling jewel as a stone. Their karmic connection to liberation will disappear in the presence of the virtuous friend, as it says in the Samadhi of the Present Buddha Manifest: "If one harbors anger, contempt, or hatred towards the Dharma speaker, or does not generate the thought of seeing the teacher as a Buddha, then it is impossible for them to obtain qualities. The Dharma that has not been obtained will not be obtained, or the Dharma that has been obtained will not increase. It will disappear due to disrespect." Therefore, this is the only place that wise people should be careful about. Just as in this world, the subjects covered by the lord of sinful deeds see food falling from the sky, feeling tense, acting cautiously, and not even daring to relax their breath. Relying on the Lama with caution, with respect and fear, not being indulgent, one will obtain immeasurable merit and become the cause of liberation from suffering, as it says in the monastic letter sent to the Lama: "Caution is the place of immortality."

Thus. Heedlessness is the place of death; the heedful do not die; the heedless always die. Understanding this difference, the wise are always heedful. They greatly rejoice in heedfulness and delight in the realm of the noble ones. Steadfastly achieving supreme bliss, they touch Nirvana. As it is said, just as a newly ordained monk fears defeat, all causes that lead to punishment by others, such as seductive things, ornaments, and weapons, should be abandoned. One should abide as if punishing oneself. As it is said in the 'Gongdu': 'The conduct of a new monk, actions such as seduction, ornaments, and weapons should be abandoned. The wise and respectful one should impose punishment on oneself, abandoning the grounds for others' punishment.' Also, as it is said in the 'Arya Ratnamegha Sutra': 'In any place where a Dharma speaker resides, one should generate the perception of a stupa, and for the Dharma speaker, generate the perception of a lama, a virtuous friend, and a teacher. Upon seeing them, one should rejoice and generate joy.' Thus it is said. Not associating with the faithless: 'One should not befriend those who curse and hate the lama, and one should avoid them as much as possible. If one speaks complacently, the power of sin is especially great, and it will damage vows.' Even if one is without fault, if one becomes close and intimate with those who slander and view the lama wrongly, then one is a person of wrong views, a forerunner to a precipice, a guide to the lower realms, and therefore should be abandoned. As it is said in the 'General Sutra': 'The wise who act with wrong views are forerunners to jumping off a cliff and are not suitable as objects of loving-kindness.' Thus it is. If one has the means and ability to reverse the other's lack of faith, then one can also cut off the continuum of the other's non-merit. For example, when the small kingdoms threatened King Ajatashatru with war, Queen Vaidehi rebuked him, saying, 'You have done non-meritorious deeds to the Tathagata, and that is why this has happened.' Like this, she exposed his faults. If someone befriends those who regard the virtuous friend as an enemy and an opponent, and speaks complacently, then the power of sin is immeasurable. The more one associates with them, the more one's merit diminishes, and one's vows...
