In general, there is no fault in the realm of the lama, but in terms of being close, faults arise from disrespectful behavior. Therefore, one should examine one's own faults and strive to confess them, knowing that this will prevent the failure of dependent origination. In terms of conduct, the way to rely on the lama is as follows: When the lama rises, one should not sit on a seat. When he is seated, one should inquire about his health and offer necessities. When he departs, one should not follow from the right, but should serve as an attendant. Disparaging seats and vehicles diminishes merit. Slamming doors, acting coquettishly, frowning, lying, babbling, laughing, engaging in irrelevant talk, lacking respect and fear, and thinking whatever one pleases should be abandoned. One should rely on the lama with the three doors of body, speech, and mind pacified. In the world, even kings and officials who only provide happiness, fame, and sustenance in this life are served as slaves with body, speech, and life. Even the five-fire asceticism of outsiders is endured. Therefore, to serve the lama with body and speech, aiming for liberation and omniscience, is to extract great meaning from a meaningless body, for it is said: Even if one does not know or understand all the teachings, by greatly honoring and serving the lama who has become a holy being, one will cross the ocean of samsara. Therefore, when the lama rises, one should not jump up from the seat. When he is seated, one should offer one's own clothes and other things as a seat, inquire about his health, and offer necessities. When he departs, one should spread mats on the road, dust off dust, hold up a parasol, do things like laying carpets, wrap dirty or stained things in cloth, tidy up the mount and livestock, and oneself should also follow as an attendant. Moreover, the right side is the end of the line, so it should be avoided. Going from the front is the initial action, so it is not appropriate. Going from behind will incur the fault of stepping on footprints, so it should be avoided. Going from the left is permissible, because in places like the circumambulation path, there is no fault of oneself entering into it and striking the holy being. Similarly, one should not step on shoes, clothes, seats, vehicles, and the shadow of the lama's body. Unless there is a special situation, one should not share the same room and corridor, one should not measure the lama's height, one should not compare oneself with him in terms of height, and one should not spit in the presence of the lama.

Avoid throwing things like mucus, sitting in the lotus position or in a pretentious manner, displaying stiff behavior, being restless in movement and stillness, slamming doors, glaring with anger, frowning and clapping hands, pointing fingers and stretching limbs, and sitting like a lazy person or someone waiting for alms. In short, the Compendium Sutra says: "When in the same place as the holy ones, never be closer than an attendant. Do not step over their shadow, and do not raise dust from their footprints. Clothes, hand cushions, mats, and so on, should never be stepped on. Disrespectful and impolite behavior is not appropriate in the presence of the holy ones." Similarly, the faults of mind and speech are described in the Inquiry of Powerful Intellect Sutra: "The cause of the dark world is the mind, the root of poison. The mouth is the door of sin, from which evil speech arises." In particular, holding views contrary to the actions of a virtuous spiritual friend, being greedy for the lama's wealth and activities, being competitive, jealous, arrogant, critical, malicious, and looking down on their livelihood, lineage, appearance, and possessions are hidden faults of the mind. Lying, causing discord, using harsh words, engaging in frivolous talk, disobeying instructions or speaking back, cutting off hope, arguing, and speaking ill behind their back are all serious faults. Saying such things once in the presence of the lama is more serious than saying them hundreds or thousands of times elsewhere, as it becomes the work of a demon. The Sutra of the Array of Qualities says: "There are four works of demons: disrespecting the lama, not keeping the Dharma in mind, speaking arrogantly, and being attached to this life." The Compendium Sutra says: "Why do you act deceitfully towards those who have become holy? By deceiving all the holy ones, you will fall into the Vajra Hell." Therefore, any deceitful thoughts and actions done in the presence of the lama are because of having a deceitful mind. Since all the holy ones are of the same essence, deceiving one is the same as deceiving all, and the result will be the same. Similarly, do not be angry, use harsh words, or be promiscuous. Do not act carelessly, and do not engage in improper or unconventional behavior.
