In this way, pretending to be respectful, thinking that one should obtain the key points and transmissions from this master by various means, otherwise we are of a higher caste than him, or our wealth exceeds him, which would damage merit and glory, not mindful of the kindness of the master who is the source of Dharma, like a hunter. Viewing the Dharma as wages, merely hearing it a little by various means, and in the end, in terms of vows, like a hunter, entering a state of disregarding shame and embarrassment, these people themselves will also be short-lived, inauspicious, and wander in the lower realms in the next life. Moreover, the master's life and activities will also be harmed, causing faults in the lineage of the Dharma, therefore, examining the foundation of a person is very important. As it is said in the commentary on the "Three Statements on Samaya": Disparaging the Vajra Master of Secret Mantra, exchanging Dharma for wealth, not keeping vows with reason, these people are short-lived in this life, their fortune and good fortune decline, they suffer from the punishment of the Dakinis, and fall into the lower realms in the next life. Also, all those who are narrow-minded and ignorant, give up the key points of the instructions after obtaining them, and in the end, are exhausted from searching for various kinds of texts, not seeing the new, and losing all the previous ones. There is a type of person who is extremely broad-minded, thinking that all the Dharma must be heard, but after hearing it, they do not practice it, only collecting texts, without any definite view on the difference between Dharma and non-Dharma, yet engaging in new and annoying debates, for such people, not a single bit of the blessing of the lineage of the master will enter, and what has entered before will also dissipate like mist. The instructions that are not practiced and are accompanied by doubt do not benefit either oneself or others. This is like the story of the Brahmin woman in which the hunter chases the wild boar. It is very important to examine the qualities of faith that applies to the true meaning, the desire to strive for this seemingly real life, and the neutral attitude that is not clearly indicated in either of the two. In general, there is no certainty in merely following the Dharma, because there are three ways of entering: entering with faith, entering with desire, and entering with an unclear indication. Entering with faith means that the master and the sublime Dharma are mutually dependent.

Knowing thus, possessing renunciation, delighting in supports and offerings, making offerings to the Three Jewels, being generous in giving, and those of noble lineage who genuinely engage in the three activities of listening, contemplating, and meditating with a motivation of faith, benefit both themselves and others in the short and long term. Entering with desire means: being driven by the happiness, pleasure, and fame of this life, and by the evil motivations of attachment and aversion, temporarily relying on the lama and the Dharma, but not trusting in the thought of necessarily being liberated from samsara, not devoting oneself to meditation, but seeking wealth by relying on empowerment or transmission, engaging in activities and various endeavors without being motivated by the thought of benefiting others, or being driven by arrogance and jealousy, pursuing poisonous listening and contemplation. Having no interest in offering to the Three Jewels and the generation and completion stages, but merely using offerings and supports as decorations, those are called desire-holders who deceive both themselves and others. Entering in an unpredicted way means: those foolish, impartial ones who do not rely on either of the above two ways, having neither faith in the Dharma nor desire, imitate what others do, like a monkey's meditation and a parrot's knowledge-mantra, and thus enter (the Dharma), never taking any vows or precepts, wandering in the wilderness like a stray dog. Therefore, the first way is incomparable and should be followed; the latter two ways should be transformed into the correct path through various methods and interdependent connections, and through special aspirational connections, be cherished as objects of taming in the future. Having explained the different aspects of students, next, the characteristics of special qualities are explained as the beginning of examining the vessel: One who is armored and whose wisdom is extremely firm, who does not consider body and life, who diligently serves, who reverently obeys whatever is said, and who does not protect oneself, that person is liberated solely through devotion. Thus, in the profound Sutra and Tantra sections, the characteristics of the lama and the disciple, and the key secrets of practice, have been extensively explained. If condensed into one key point, it is this self-evident reason: It must be a lama who has transcended samsara, who has liberated his own being through realization, and who possesses great compassion. The student should possess a strong armor of faith like Nagarjuna's bodhicitta, be difficult to be changed by circumstances, and have a firm mind.
