Then, all the bad thoughts arising from afflictions are seen as the guru's faults. If one receives gifts and gains from the guru's possessions, offerings, and enjoyments, new faith and reverence will increase slightly. But this is also impermanent, like the changing of the four seasons, and one cannot even predict the changes from morning to evening. To such a person, one should first earnestly advise: "You will attain happiness in both this life and the next, so enter the path of Dharma." But like approaching an untamed yak, they will run away. Even if they enter the path of Dharma in between, they will become weary of hearing the words "hearing, thinking, and meditating," and think that they have entered the Dharma gate for the sake of great worldly affairs. Eventually, when their mind slightly inclines towards hearing, thinking, and meditating, they will think that attaining merit and great benefit in these three realms is the sacred Dharma itself. Even attaining the status of Brahma and a universal monarch cannot compare to it. Therefore, the evil demons are very distressed because they fear that even if one sentient being attains Buddhahood from the desire realm, it will reduce their territory. When the mind becomes uncontrollable, the arrow of the demon pierces the heart. As the Vajrasekhara Sutra says: "Obstacles do not come from elsewhere, one's own mind is the demon." Like this, the first step towards going astray is to have all sorts of thoughts and doubts arise in the presence of the guru, and to be dissatisfied. They deceive the guru and Dharma friends, claiming: "This will increase virtuous deeds even more, this will lead to a more secluded place." As soon as they leave the monastery, their minds become unrestrained. At that time, all directions are filled only with children and sinful friends, so by associating and befriending them, even if the Dharma is slightly damaged, or even if it is not damaged, their thoughts are like those of a wild man at the edge of the forest, controlled by desire, hatred, and ignorance. Their behavior is like the tip of a kusha grass swaying and moving with the wind, and they will become assimilated with them. Therefore, when they stay near the holy ones, they long to escape; wherever they go, they are seized by sin; if they are specifically urged to go into seclusion, their Dharma will collapse, like the tip of a kusha grass following the wind.

Alas! Like this, the disciple's disposition and thoughts, as well as the degree of their mind-stream, are known only by the guru. Therefore, whether to encourage solitary retreat, or to encourage benefiting beings, or to remain in one's own place, whatever the guru indicates, one should follow and practice, so that there will be no obstacles. Unless the disciple himself requests, one should not easily separate from the virtuous friend. As it says in the Sutra of General Collection: Therefore, with the supreme guide, never be separated, just like the body and the shadow, if wisdom is in harmony, one will become a supreme person. Also, the merchant's daughter Norzang followed the noble Manjushri and made praises. The noble one said: Associating with the guru and serving him is the foundation for accomplishing great enlightenment, therefore, rely on and associate with him, do not be weary. Our teacher, when passing into nirvana between two sala trees, did not separate from the fourfold assembly, nor did he cut off the door of the Dharma that thoroughly reverses from the five aggregates. As it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra: All the lamps of the world that have not yet appeared, they successively attain enlightenment, turn the wheel of Dharma, show the end of nirvana, the utterly peaceful end, I pray before all the protectors. Even in future lives, I aspire to be like the youth Norzang, relying solely on virtuous friends. The commentary on the aspiration to become the conduct of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva in future lives, as well as treatises like 'Elephant of the Directions,' should also be studied. Furthermore, with the deceitful and cunning tongue of a bad person, approaching the guru like an elephant clinging to a pillar smeared with spices, after obtaining the precious Dharma like beeswax, instead, with great joy, shooting vows at the hunter. Therefore, first, do not easily accept disciples who are too arrogant or too sensitive, having a good character is extremely important. If the character is good, relying on faith and wisdom, etc., the accumulation of merit, one can continuously improve. But people with bad character are difficult to tame, their words and thoughts are inconsistent, their thoughts and actions do not match, they are difficult to please and are jealous, their afflictions are coarse and their antidotes are weak, they are skilled in false pretenses, from the very beginning they harbor thoughts and views of deceiving the Dharma and the guru, and they have no renunciation or respect for themselves.
