Being killed. (Because) one will definitely suffer in the Avīci hell for an eon. In that fierce fire, even the bones of the body will be completely burned. Because there is no time for happiness, it is called the Avīci hell. Thus, being arrogant with merit, abandoning and slandering the supreme Dharma, as well as breaking vows, etc., it is said that one will be born in the Avīci hell. Thus, the difference in the heat of the fire of those eight great hells is also that the latter is seven times hotter than the former, just like the difference between ordinary firewood, sandalwood, and the fire at the end of the kalpa. As it is said in the "Karma Differentiation": Ordinary firewood, sandalwood, the end of the kalpa, and the hellfires, also in order, the same suffering increases sevenfold. It means that the feeling also becomes coarser at seven times the speed, and the suffering also increases sevenfold. Now, in order to explain the retinue of those hells, the surrounding hells. Sighing from suffering, produced by conceptual thought. The gate of the surrounding hell is a burning charcoal pit, a swamp of rotten corpses, a dense forest of swords, an uncrossable river, covered with the hail of the Lord of Death. Thus, each sentient hell Among the eight great ones, on each of the four directions, there are burning charcoal pits, swamps of rotten corpses, forests of sword leaves, and uncrossable rivers. Four as a group, existing like a wheel, are called the sixteen augmentations. As it is said in the commentary on the "Friendly Letter": These four augmentations exist in order at the four gates of all sentient hells. Therefore, each of the eight great sentient hells that are about to be described has sixteen augmentations. Thus it is said. When the karma to be experienced mentioned above is slightly reduced, one feels that the doors in the four directions are opened, and the thought of escaping arises, mistakenly thinking that the ashes are a stream of water, recalling the state of being burned. As it is said in the "Mindfulness Sutra": After passing like this, the thought of a stream of water arises, and as soon as one crosses it, when reaching the waist, the flesh is also burned, and the bones are also shattered, and then one is revived, and on the shore, the Yamaraja attendants who were playing before are guarding. Thus it is said. On the way to that place, there are iron-maned dogs chasing, pits filled with burning charcoal and sharp stones, knees Just submerged, as soon as the foot is placed, the skin and flesh

If thrown into a pool of blood, one experiences the suffering of rebirth. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": 'Dogs with matted hair piled high, tear at the body with sharp, long, vajra-like teeth. On the banks of the immeasurable river, filled with ashes and flames, they chase after unbearable stones with sharp, jagged edges.' The swamp of decay is: being trapped in a vast swamp of outer realms, creatures with white bodies, black heads, and sharp beaks pierce the skin. Tormented by suffering, they become unable to move, like a bird caught in the net of karma. As stated earlier: 'Some tiny buzzing insects, in swarms, numb and swell the body, completely devouring it. Those who feel trapped in the net of karma's nature, cannot even move, yet they live.' The sword-like grove is: after escaping from the blazing fire, the swamp of decay, and the great road filled with razor blades, in a secluded area, it appears as a green forest, as explained in the "Commentary on the Letter to a Friend." Running there in search of refuge, the wind caused by karma shakes the trees, and all the leaves fall like a rain of weapons, causing the body to tremble and cry out, separated from friends. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": 'Tormented day and night, unbearable, the body saddened by loss, seeing the lush green leaves of the trees, goes forth. The leaves there fall like a hundred weapons, causing the body to tremble, and there, for a long time, dwells with smoke, lost to friends.' The immeasurable river is: The "Commentary on the Letter to a Friend" states: 'It is an unbearable saline hot spring, called the immeasurable river, encircling the edge of the grove of sword-like leaves, like a hellish abyss.' It is said that all the paths there are like a razor plain, and from above, one is struck by the swords of the willow grove. Therefore, from the perspective of the path, it is a razor plain, but its essence is a hot spring containing borax and salt, called the immeasurable river, into which one falls into sharp weapons. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": 'Running exhausted through the sword-like leaves of the willow grove filled with razor blades, the body is wounded, without refuge, falling into the pit filled with tridents, short spears, arrows, and sharp swords, the gaping mouth of the Lord of Death.' This is the explanation.
