La. Those who have not heard comprehensively and lack the qualities of scriptural authority; those who do not know what to permit and what to forbid, and whose conduct violates vows and commitments; those who lack the wisdom to realize the ultimate reality, yet imitate engaging in the practice of perfect abandonment and realization; those whose stream of loving-kindness and compassion has dried up, and who follow after gain and honor for their own sake. Just as entrusting a path to a madman will lead you to a non-path as a matter of course, these pretenders to Dharma will lead you from the precipice of false teachings into the abyss of sinful views. In particular, if one does not rely on someone with superior qualities, but instead relies on the fame of someone devoid of bodhicitta, it is like a blind guide leading to great error, wandering in the darkness of pretense. Therefore, if one does not thoroughly examine a holy person, the accumulation of merit of a faithful person will be wasted, and the precious opportunity of leisure and endowment, once obtained, will be deceived like a venomous snake or a mirage. Like this, a blind person leading a blind person is not a possible thing even in the world. Therefore, whatever the disciple may be, the qualities of the guru must be far superior. As it is said in the Collection of Friends, "Relying on an inferior one causes decline, relying on an equal one remains in the same state, relying on a superior one obtains superior qualities, therefore one should rely on one who is superior to oneself." As it is said, if the disciple is on the path of accumulation, then the guru must be established on the path of preparation. Similarly, for a disciple on the path of preparation, the guru must be on the path of seeing; to lead a disciple on the path of seeing, the guru must be established on the path of meditation; for a disciple on the path of meditation, the guru must be one who has attained the state of omniscience. If this is the case, then one might think that it contradicts the statements in the sutras and tantras that one must regard the guru as a Buddha. Here, firstly, if the relationship between guru and disciple is not established with a distinction in qualities, then after testing, one cannot be a basis for devotion, and with pretense, blessings will not enter. Therefore, one should examine in this way. From the perspective of offering devotion and making supplications, it is not to regard the guru as someone established on the path. In particular, the precious bodhicitta is the treasury of all qualities, the supreme field of faith. If one is separated from it and relies on someone who is deceived by mere superficial fame, then the disciple
