Without focusing awareness on the meaning of the Dharma's words and phrases, but instead focusing on meditation or sleepiness and drowsiness, or because the time is too long, or because of boredom due to not understanding, to counteract these six situations, formerly King Shani Pali, in order to hear a single four-word Dharma phrase, lit a thousand lamps on his body, and King Galing hammered a thousand iron nails into his body. Thinking of their spiritual strength, the Buddha said: The appearance of the Tathagatas is rare. To be born as a human is extremely rare. To possess leisure and endowments is rare. To generate faith in the teachings of the Tathagata is rare. Therefore, one should constantly contemplate the faults of samsara and respectfully listen to the Dharma. Why is that? It is to be said here that one should know that the supreme Dharma will surely decline, and one will be separated from the light of the Dharma. The light of wisdom will completely decline, and one will not encounter virtuous friends. The time of extreme terror is near, and one will associate with sentient beings who do not possess the Dharma. Knowing these things, one should respectfully listen to the Dharma. Regarding the meaning of this passage, one must raise one's spirits and listen attentively. The five faults of non-attachment are: Although it is said to not be attached to the words and phrases but to focus on the meaning, if the words and phrases are wrong, the meaning will also be wrong. Therefore, one should rely on the words and phrases to generate an understanding of the meaning. Not being attached to the meaning refers to some people who only focus on the words and phrases. If one does not contemplate the meaning expressed by the words and phrases, it is like the Bhikshu Devadatta, who can memorize many Pitakas. Holding onto words without understanding their meaning refers to, if we take this treatise as an example, naming the meaning "A Treasury of Precious Qualities," and naming the example "Commentary: The Chariot of Two Truths." Moreover, the Fruition Vehicle is the nature of the great equality of pure truth, therefore, the treatise that transforms the name into "Omniscient Chariot," if a person lets time pass and does not strive for the method of easily realizing through the nature of hearing, thinking, and meditating, they will lose the necessary meaning of accomplishing the two benefits of temporary and ultimate. Similarly, the basis of view, the path of meditation, and the behavior of spiritual friends are completely and unerringly taught. This is the meaning of the summary, and the meaning of the words and phrases, the thirteen chapters of the text are extensively explained by the commentary.

When a person who connects the past and future guides someone onto the path, the establishment of the foundation of Dharma is extensively explained from the first to the tenth chapter. The subsequent three chapters reveal the uncommon aspects of the ground, path, and fruition of the Great Perfection of Naturalness, which is the essential point. Through additional questions and answers, one's own established tenets are determined. These are for those who cannot distinguish the nuances of words and meanings. If these are applied to the circumstances of the speaker, it is the understanding of exposition. For those who wish to speak of the essence of the sutras, a few instructions should be given. The instruction is this: one should explain with the meaning that includes the summarized necessities, includes questions and answers, includes connections, and includes the meaning of the words. This is its meaning. Wrong understanding is: although it is said that the tradition and path of the teachings have been established, one clings to minor instructions and is unwilling to measure the vastness of the Dharma's meaning. Incomplete understanding is: one values what is important and agrees with one's mind, and accepts what agrees with one's mind; one becomes lazy in small and difficult places, and thus does not fully grasp the entirety of the treatise, so it does not benefit oneself or others. Therefore, just as a bee tastes the essence of a flower, being close to and delighting in the practice of listening to the Dharma that will arise below is indispensable. From beginningless time, the plague of birth, old age, sickness, and death has struck, and the great nectar medicine. How should I advise those who possess the noble Dharma but abandon it? Having said this, he speaks of the faults of not accepting the noble Dharma. Like this, birth arises from the four ways, such as the womb. Old age is the change of age. Sickness is the imbalance of the elements. Death is the abandonment of life. Like this, the extremely fierce plague has been striking from beginningless time until now, making the world miserable. However, for its antidote, the great nectar of the noble Dharma, one does not listen, does not use thought to manifest, and does not use meditation to hold it. That fault is like a person who has been severely struck by disease fleeing from the doctor and wandering in vain in the wilderness. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: Those who do not obtain, do not enjoy, and do not hold that nectar that eliminates birth, old age, sickness, and death, those people have many faults and are ignorant.
