Here, too, nothing that hasn't happened is mentioned. I also don't have the skill to compose verses. Therefore, I have no thought of benefiting others. I composed this to familiarize myself with it. Thus it is said. Even so, because it relies on the true words of the holy Dharma, it is appropriate to listen. The Suhrllekha (Friendly Epistle) says: Just as the Sugata's (Buddha's) image, even if made of wood, is worshiped by the wise, no matter how it is made. Likewise, even if my poetry is bad, do not criticize it because it relies on speaking of the holy Dharma. Thus it is said. The need for explaining and listening in this way is to be delighted in the fact that the giving of Dharma is the most supreme of all gifts. The Sutra says: Monks, these two persons generate much merit, extract the root of sin, and wage war with the Maras (demons). They overthrow the banner of Mara. They raise the banner of Dharma. They turn the wheel of Dharma of the Tathagata (Buddha). What are the two? Whoever respectfully teaches the Dharma, and whoever respectfully listens to the Dharma. Therefore, you should respectfully teach the Dharma and respectfully listen to the Dharma from the Lamas. Thus it is said, and from the aspect of qualities, in whatever lifetime, one holds the treasury of Dharma. The Tathagata (Buddha) and his sons will remember. One always remembers past lives. One hears the Dharma from the Buddha and quickly attains its state, and so forth. Listening purifies the obscurations of the mind. It cuts the bonds of doubt. One is always inseparable from the holy Dharma. One obtains the dharani of non-forgetfulness. One does not fall into bad migrations and wrong paths. One is protected by the gods of the white side, and has few illnesses and harms. By obtaining the eye of wisdom, one quickly transcends samsara and undoubtedly obtains the state of omniscience. Therefore, the Sutra says: By listening, one knows all things. By listening, one turns away from sin. By listening, one abandons meaningless things. By listening, one attains Nirvana. Thus it is said. So, who has such a transformation in this life? By listening to the holy Dharma, Angulimala (Finger Necklace) turned away from killing, the Yaksha nomads turned away from killing people, the Naga (serpent) king Sogmame destroyed crops, and the Yakshini (female demon) robbed a hundred beings.

Turning away from killing countless lives, Yakshas stab and kill with poisonous needles, fish in the ocean and merchants named Taming are killed by the thousands, the fear of frogs falling into evil destinies, the fear of the moon being swallowed by Rahu, the fear of the sun being swallowed by Asuras, the fear of Indra falling into evil destinies, the eternal view of Brahma, and the actions of heretical sons turning to evil paths, Brahmins' attachment to fame is transformed by hearing the true Dharma. Master Samudra-datta said this. Similarly, the son of the gods is extremely steadfast, and his younger brother, Gawa, is terrified by the fear of death, so it is not enough to express liberation, etc. These arise from the listener abandoning the three faults of the vessel, the six stains, and the five faults of non-grasping. For example, just as a vessel with its mouth facing down can never hold essence, when listening to the Dharma, if the mind is distracted elsewhere, or falls into drowsiness, or focuses on other objects, the words and meanings of the Dharma cannot be understood. Just as a vessel with a hole in the bottom causes the essence to leak out, even if one hears a little, if one does not delve into the meaning of the words, merit will not increase in the continuum. Just as a poisonous vessel makes the essence impure, listening and thinking for the sake of knowledge and fame, aiming to refute others in the midst of many for the sake of praising oneself, or similarly, listening and thinking with evil motivations of greed for gain, competition, and jealousy, will not become a cause for Bodhi. Being completely entangled by sins does not benefit oneself or others. Therefore, it is very important to have good motivation. The six stains are: Vasubandhu said in the Commentary on Epistemology: "Arrogance and disbelief, not seeking deep meaning, external distraction, listening with weariness, are the six stains." That is to say, despising the teacher who is teaching, thinking that one's own position is higher than the teacher's, or being arrogant thinking that one is proficient in the Dharma, criticizing the faults of the Dharma and the teacher, or not showing faith in what others say because of malice, or not seeking deep meaning because one thinks it doesn't matter whether one hears or not, or the mind being distracted by other objects of the six senses such as the eyes.
