As stated in the Sutra "Cloud of Jewels" and the "Three Samayas," offerings that are not owned, such as flowers, fruit trees, lands, rivers, and precious treasures, can also be offered. Moreover, these offerings should not be mixed with the defiled mind of belittling others, pleasing kings who have faith in the Buddha, or hoping to gain profit, respect, and fame for oneself. They should not be obtained by stealing unlawful objects from others or through sinful means. In particular, the four immeasurable offerings that please the Buddhas, the three vows, the Three Jewels, the six perfections, the remembrance of the meaning of profound emptiness, the three wisdoms, and the four means of gathering, etc., all of which gather all virtuous dharmas, are called immeasurable accomplishment offerings, which are complete and great offerings. When making such offerings, one should generate the six thoughts of immeasurable results as explained in the Bodhisattva Grounds: regard the Three Jewels as the supreme field of merit; regard them as extremely rare like the Udumbara flower; regard them as the best of all sentient beings; regard them as the supreme benefactors; regard them as appearing only once in the three thousand great thousand worlds; and offer them as the basis of all worldly and transcendental perfections. As stated in the Sutra: "In the field of faith, cultivate the field of merit." Thus, when encountering this supreme field of merit for all happiness in this life and the next, if one does not sow the seeds of the precious accumulation of virtue and does not know that all happiness arises from the grace of the Three Jewels, this is the behavior of an inferior child.

Giving this also to the Pratyekabuddha, like raining down enjoyment, like the Jataka tale of being born as King Golden Hue. Thus, having made offerings and recollected, whether day and night entirely, or six times, or three times, or even once in each part of the day and night, one should take refuge. Because it is the nature of the mind to follow what it is accustomed to, even if there is no other practice, at the time of death one will recollect the Buddha. If one recollects and takes refuge in this way, it is of great significance. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: 'With body, speech, and mind greatly delighted, constantly praise the Buddhas. Thus, by meditating on the mind stream, day and night one sees the protector of the world. When that one is sick and uncomfortable, and feels the suffering of approaching death, the recollection of the Buddha will not diminish, and the feeling of suffering will not be able to steal it away.' It is said. For example, when Devadatta was tormented by the feeling of hellfire, he cried out from the depths of his heart, 'I take refuge in the Buddha!' By this power, he was prophesied to attain enlightenment as a Pratyekabuddha named 'Bone.' Such a way of taking refuge, as stated in the Compendium, is complete with the four characteristics of taking refuge: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, making a commitment, and not speaking otherwise. Furthermore, in that same text, it is said: 'Relying on a noble person, listening to the noble Dharma, and acting in accordance with the Sangha are taking refuge.' As it is said, relying on a noble person who is the essence of the Three Jewels, learning from their actions and praising their qualities. Listening to all the profound and vast Dharma, and practicing the qualities of the Three Jewels of cause and effect accordingly. Practicing discipline with mindful conduct, meditating with contemplation, and having a view that is not hidden and is in accordance with the Abhidharma, such practice is the true refuge of following the path. The object of study of the fruit is the Dharmakaya of the Thubpa (Buddha), having awakened in the realm of separation, attainment, and abandonment. Not grasping at protector and protected, transcending terminology, therefore the object of giving is also a superimposed designation. Thereupon, after realizing the essence of the mind, like a mirror, by one's own power...

Understanding the meaning that the nature of the Three Jewels is not gathered by other conditions is the Refuge of Result. Like understanding the nature of various appearances arising from the distinctions of mental events, such as knowing an image, is the Refuge of Cause. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga, "There, one knows and understands the meaning; its distinctions arise from the mind." Thus, mind and mental events are like the sun and its rays, functioning equally. When the manifestation of their activity dissolves into the expanse of reality, and elaboration is pacified, the protector, the Three Jewels, and the object to be protected, the self-grasping, both do not exist. Therefore, the precepts and vows taken through rituals become merely empty words that can only be designated by terms. If this key point is not understood, even the edge of the ultimate Refuge cannot be known. Therefore, considering an inferior Refuge as the Vajra Refuge abiding in reality is extremely ignorant. Thus, at the stage of the path, the abandonment of cause, the characteristic Refuge, is abandoned because wrong views arise towards the object of Refuge. Because the precepts are degenerated, one falls into inferiority. Therefore, one should guard them carefully, like protecting a wound. Some people think that on top of the first three precepts mentioned in the sutras, adding constant Refuge, not abandoning even for the sake of life, and offering to the Three Jewels, if one contradicts these six, one should abandon the Refuge. Some others add to this the contempt for the emanations of the three bodies, such as statues, and think that if all nine are complete, one should abandon the Refuge. However, generating wrong views towards the object of Refuge, abandoning the Three Jewels, and abandoning the precepts of Refuge because one cannot practice them are the true reasons for abandoning the Refuge. If one does not abandon the Three Jewels but also holds onto other objects such as teachers who contradict them, then one has not yet truly understood the superiority and inferiority of inner and outer teachers and teachings, which is a sign of not having faith in the Three Jewels. Therefore, it contradicts the establishment of "having taken Refuge" by not speaking of other Refuges from the beginning, so it is close to abandonment. Teacher Thotun said, "I have abandoned other teachers." That is the distinction of teachers previously quoted. Also, as it says in the Praise of the Praiseworthy, "What is entering and exiting, what is defilement and purification, only that is the teaching of you, the hero, others"
