Thus. And in that very text (referring to the "Treasure of Merit"), it says: Whether for ordinary individuals, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, or Bodhisattvas, they do not see the essence of the Buddha as it is. For example, if a blind person asks another about the color of butter, and that person says it is like snow. When the blind person touches the snow, they perceive the color of butter as cold. If asked, "What is the color of snow like?" The reply is, "Like the wings of a swan." Hearing the sound of swan's wings, they perceive the color of snow as noisy. If asked, "What is the color of the wings like?" The reply is, "Like a conch shell." Touching a conch shell and finding it smooth, they perceive the snow as smooth as well. No matter how it is described, the blind person ultimately cannot know the true nature of color. Similarly, the self-nature of the Buddha is extremely difficult to see. Thus, and so on. Refuting these views, in order to establish one's own vow, it is said, "Here," and so forth. Here, our own system's view is that the essence of the Dharmadhatu, which is pure from the beginning, and the qualities that are spontaneously accomplished, are like water and its moisture. It is neither one nor different. Why? Because it is free from all the elaborations of phenomenal characteristics, it is pure from the beginning; because it is profoundly clear and unobstructed, it is spontaneously accomplished. As it is said, in the "Six Spaces": The essence itself is pure from the beginning, Its nature is spontaneously accomplished. And in the "String of Pearls": Essence is pure from the beginning, beyond expression, Nature is spontaneously accomplished, one appearance complete. It is said: If, as above, it becomes a situation of refuting each other's tenets, then is there no contradiction in establishing the two as one here? The answer is: It is not contradictory for two things to appear on one basis. For example, when one is about to fall asleep, and in the state of drowsy sleep and deep sleep, the accumulation of eighty types of conceptual thoughts ceases, so there are no dreams; then, again, due to the disturbance of the wind element, one dreams in the consciousness, just as different things appear in one mind. The essence is pure from the beginning, so in samsara, in the three times of past, present, and future, it has never transmigrated, does not transmigrate, and will not (498) change. The power of the spontaneously accomplished nature allows any play of samsara and nirvana to appear. The meaning of this, to establish it definitively through analogy by means of key instructions, is as follows, and so forth. For example, the self-radiance of a lapis lazuli jewel, although constantly clear from the depths, does not appear outwardly without external conditions such as sunlight.

Therefore, like this, the primordially pure, self-arisen nature that has abandoned things and characteristics, spontaneously accomplished, without external obstruction, like the body of a youthful vase, that is: the essence is empty of elaboration, and the self-radiance is unobstructed, therefore, the Eight Thousand Verses says: "There is no mind in the mind, the nature of the mind is luminosity." Therefore, as the basis for the arising of all appearances, it abides constantly in the three times, yet, the essence of the ground is emptiness, and the precious bodhicitta that does not move from it, things and characteristics are not established, therefore it is not limited, so it is not obvious. That is also, in relation to the essence of primordial purity, it is said "that is" and so on. The original basis of primordial purity, which transcends the limits of faults and qualities, that is not the Buddha established by name, nor is it a sentient being. Transcending things (499) and characteristics, therefore it is neither one nor different, nor does it have a beginning or middle. It is not a nihilistic emptiness where nothing exists, nor is it the existence of things. As it says in the Garland of Pearls: In the essence of abiding nature, there is no Buddha and no sentient being, no ignorance and no confusion, no mind and no intellect, no enemy and no friend, and no relatives, no afflictions and no self-grasping, no going and no coming, no dharma and no appearance as dharma, no means and no wisdom, no aggregates and no elements, no object and no grasping, no action, no faculties and no objects, no object to be grasped and no grasper, no body and no wisdom, no knower and no object of knowledge, no light and no color, no sound and no smell, etc., no desire and no attachment, no realm and no palace, no deity and no object of offering. Thus it is said. In the Six Spaces it says: There is no appearance as a faculty here, because the coarse characteristics are naturally pure, it abides in the basis of great profound clarity, pervading and (500) pervading emptiness, in the appearance without interruption inside and out, the clear appearance is unobstructed, the essence of all the condensed essence, without impurities, freely pure. The Buddhas are in the great secret, by nature they abide in the part. Thus it is said. The essence is the primordially pure nature of phenomena, separated from the eight extremes such as arising and ceasing, existence and non-existence, which is not separated anywhere. The self-nature is without cessation, it is the body.
